[edit]NEW NOMINATIONS
[edit]Category:Carniolan people by religion
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Carniolan people by religion to Category:Carniolan people
- Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with only one subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:05, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Members of the States General of the Netherlands by term
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: I don't think this adds any value compared to Category:Lists of members of the States General of the Netherlands by term Dajasj (talk) 14:59, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge to Category:Legislators in the Netherlands by term and Category:Members of the States General of the Netherlands, redundant category layer with only one subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:58, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Quaker children's writers
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Quaker children's writers to Category:Quaker writers
- Nominator's rationale: non-defining intersection per EGRS SMasonGarrison 14:56, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:01, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:China in fiction by province
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: To be more precise and to match other categories like Category:Australia in fiction by state or territory and Category:India in fiction by state or union territory. (Autonomous regions of China are border regions comparable to provinces. In fact, Xinjiang, Ningxia, and Guangxi were formerly provinces.) T3W6K9V7Z1Q4 (talk) 19:04, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- Also propose renaming
- Category:Fictional Chinese people by province to Category:Fictional Chinese people by province or autonomous region
- Category:Films set in China by province to Category:Films set in China by province or autonomous region
- Category:Novels set in China by province to Category:Novels set in China by province or autonomous region
- Category:Short stories set in China by province to Category:Short stories set in China by province or autonomous region
- Category:Television shows set in China by province to Category:Television shows set in China by province or autonomous region
- Mild oppose, per Category:Categories by province of China, Category:Provinces of China and Provinces of China. China is divided in provinces, autonomous regions, directly-controlled municipalities, and special administrative regions. However, they are called together province-level divisions. Chinese administration is very much defined by its provinces since at least the Yuan dynasty (that's the 13th century), other types being introduced in the 20th century as province-equivalents. Although it would be more precise to list all types of province-level divisions in the name of these categories, it would be too cumbersome, and the expression "China by province" is unambiguously clear. In this case, better is the enemy of good. Categories for Australia, Canada, India and the U.S. use province or territory or a version thereof, but that is less cumbersome and does not leave out other types of administrative divisions. Place Clichy (talk) 03:39, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

- Propose deleting Category:Queer Wikipedians (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Transgender Wikipedians (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Wikipedians who reject a sexual orientation label (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: WP:MYSPACE. We deleted Category:Straight Wikipedians and Category:Heterosexual Wikipedians under the same rationale, so why not do it with the user LGBTQ categories? Freddy[citation needed] 11:46, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Keep The rationale really falls into WP:OTHERSTUFF territory. Categories such as this are used for collaborative reasons when creating WikiProjects and other core programs/outreach to find who edits Wikipedia, who may have expertise or experience in certain areas, etc. Meta categories are fundamental to community building. I would be more inclined to scrapping all Wikipedian categories before targeting specifics. – {{u|hekatlys}} WOOF 13:07, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Speedy keep, no valid reason for deletion given. Sugar Tax (talk) 15:05, 9 November 2025 (UTC)

Category:People from Boye County
[edit]- Propose merging Category:People from Boye County to Category:People from Hebei
- Nominator's rationale: "People from X" category, newly created for just one person. As always, every geographic entity that exists does not automatically get one of these the moment one person from that place has an article to file in it -- there would need to be several people from that place to file in the category before it was justifiable, and for just one person we leave them in the next higher-level entity until there are more.
As I'm not an expert on China, I'm also willing to withdraw this if somebody with more knowledge in the matter can find four or five other people to populate this with -- but it doesn't aid navigation of the Wikipedia to obsessively microcategorize everything down to the narrowest possible categories with just one article in them, so if he's the only person who can be filed here then he has to stay at the Hebei level until the Boye County level has more than just one person in it. Bearcat (talk) 15:02, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- Alt merge to parent Category:People from Baoding, since Boye County is part of Baoding. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:45, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per Marco -- Just N. (talk) 17:48, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Thoughts on alternate merge proposal to Category:People from Baoding?

Category:Recipients of the Homi Bhabha Medal and Prize
[edit]- Propose Deleting Category:Recipients of the Homi Bhabha Medal and Prize
- Nominator's rationale: WP:OCAWARD and WP:NONDEFINING
- The Homi Bhabha Medal and Prize is a physics award established in 2010. Maybe it will gain prestige over time, but right now none of the articles treat it as defining, listing it in passing with other awards. The winners are already listed in Homi Bhabha Medal and Prize for any reader interested in the topic. - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:16, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:13, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Disney Legends
[edit]- Propose Deleting Category:Disney Legends
- Nominator's rationale: WP:OCAWARD, WP:PERFCAT, WP:NONDEFINING, and WP:G4
- Disney Legends is an in-house corporate recognition program for Disney performers and employees. Billy Crystal received it for his performance in Monsters Inc. while Oprah won it for Princess & the Frog and their articles treat their Disney association as one of many performances. Long-term employees like Burny Mattinson and Leota Toombs are defined by their Disney association but we already have categories like Category:Walt Disney Animation Studios people and Category:Disney imagineers for them. Most awards have outside parties identifying winners, while this feels more like an elevated employee of the month program for self-promotion. The winners are already listed in Disney Legends for any reader interested in the topic. - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:16, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Background We've been here before; this category was previously deleted by consensus at CFD right here. - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:16, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:14, 9 November 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Category:Dutch MPs 2025–2030
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Dutch MPs 2025–2030 to Category:Dutch MPs 2025–present
- Nominator's rationale: The House has a habit of being disbanded earlier, so usually "present" is used in articles, categories and templates Dajasj (talk) 22:04, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Rename per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:15, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose This is nomination is creating work unnecessarily - if the category is renamed it will definitey have to be renamed sometime in the next five years. If it is kept as it is, there is good chance it won't have to be renamed. Most legislatures can be disbanded earlier and where they have similar categories, they do not have open-ended names as is being proposed e.g. India (Category:India MPs 2024–2029); Germany (Category:Members of the Bundestag 2025–2029); Denmark (Category:Members of the Folketing 2022–2026); Iceland (Category:Members of the Althing 2024–2028); Poland (Category:Members of the Polish Sejm 2023–2027); Australia (Category:Australian MPs 2025–2028).--Obi2canibe (talk) 11:50, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Those should be renamed too. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:41, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Rename per nom; we don't know yet whether the term will last until 2030. — Ætoms [talk] 13:40, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Rename. Wikipedia should not make predictions about the future per WP:CRYSTAL. And, if recent Dutch political history is any guide, this end date is far from certain. If this same argument holds for different countries, I would support renaming their respective current legislative term categories. - Tristan Surtel (talk) 16:51, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Ashanti Methodist ministers
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Ashanti Methodist ministers to Category:Ashanti people
- Nominator's rationale: underpopulated non-defining intersection SMasonGarrison 21:01, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge for now, this is not helpful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:16, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Businesspeople from Kitakyushu
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Businesspeople from Kitakyushu to Category:People from Kitakyushu
- Nominator's rationale: upmerge for now. underpopulated cateogry SMasonGarrison 20:56, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge for now, this is not helpful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:17, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Haemophilia in European royalty
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Haemophilia in European royalty to Category:European royalty with haemophilia
- Nominator's rationale: The contents are primarily people with haemophilia. Plus the parents are Royalty and nobility with disabilities, People with haemophilia SMasonGarrison 20:09, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Rename per nom. Omnis Scientia (talk) 16:27, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Rename per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:19, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:American female bodybuilders of Chinese descent
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 September 3#American sportspeople by country of descent SMasonGarrison 19:16, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. Omnis Scientia (talk) 16:28, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Smasongarrison (hello! long time since we last spoke, hope you're well!), also worth nominating these categories under the previous Cfd.
- Omnis Scientia (talk) 16:33, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge, trivial intersection. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:19, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Immigrants to the Republic of Geneva
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Delete for now. underpopulated category with only one person in it SMasonGarrison 18:34, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose, I have meanwhile populated the category. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:39, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Canadian consciousness researchers and theorists
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Upmerge for now. underpopulated category SMasonGarrison 18:18, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:41, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:People known as Lahori
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Nondefining. The description says: "This is category for people known by suffix Lahori." SMasonGarrison 15:22, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:42, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Navies by former colony
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Navies by former colony to Category:Navy of the Dutch East Indies
- Nominator's rationale: rename based on current content of the category. Maybe in the past there was more, but that does not help for now. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:06, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Disasters in Bavaria
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, underpopulated category and none of the other German states has its own disasters subcategory. There is no need to merge, the article is already elsewhere in the tree of potential merge targets. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:45, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- We also have the almost-similarly small Category:Disasters in North Rhine-Westphalia. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 10:49, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- I overlooked that one, will nominate it too. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:13, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 13:45, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Delete the two per nom. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 16:15, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Austrian people of the War of the Bavarian Succession
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, redundant category layer with only one subcategory. There is no need to merge, the subcategory is still appropriately parented. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:12, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, GothicGolem29 (Talk) 13:42, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Judensau
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, not a defining characteristic of these locations. This is well suitable for a list. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:51, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, GothicGolem29 (Talk) 13:42, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Military of the German Empire by state
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, anachronistic category, the German Empire was established in 1871, while most of the content of the category is from before 1871. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:31, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

Category:Military of Bavaria
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Military of Bavaria to Category:Military history of Bavaria
- Nominator's rationale: merge, Bavaria no longer has its own army, everything about it is history. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:35, 1 November 2025 (UTC)
- Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, GothicGolem29 (Talk) 13:42, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic songs
[edit]- Propose merging Category:My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic songs to Category:My Little Pony songs
- Nominator's rationale: With only four songs here and only three left in the target, it's not at all clear why we would need a separate subcategory for one individual television series within the franchise instead of just one category for the franchise as a whole. Bearcat (talk) 15:56, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- Merge - per nom. (Oinkers42) (talk) 17:15, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- Shouldn't it also be merged to Category:My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic? Marcocapelle (talk) 07:01, 24 October 2025 (UTC)
- Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

Category:Battle of Poltava
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, we do not categorize biographies by battle, that would become a sort of WP:PERFCAT. The articles are already in the tree of Category:People of the Great Northern War. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:12, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Zaporozhian Host
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Zaporozhian Host to Category:Cossack Hetmanate
- Propose renaming Category:17th century in the Zaporozhian Host to Category:17th century in the Cossack Hetmanate
- Propose renaming Category:18th century in the Zaporozhian Host to Category:18th century in the Cossack Hetmanate
- Nominator's rationale: rename, article Cossack Hetmanate starts with "The Cossack Hetmanate ... officially the Zaporozhian Host..." while article Zaporozhian Host is a sort of disambiguation page. It looks like Cossack Hetmanate is the common name. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:58, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
People of the Ministry
[edit]- Propose merging Category:People of the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Ministry of Culture (China)
- Propose merging Category:People of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Ministry of Education (China)
- Propose merging Category:People of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Ministry of Science and Technology (China)
- Nominator's rationale: Upmerge redundant category layers. They have barely any contents and don't fit into a category tree for people by ministry. Other countries' categories don't do this and neither do any other Chinese ministry categories. Mclay1 (talk) 12:57, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:03, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Lists of theatres in the United States
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Rename to use American English per WP:ENGVAR. Servite et contribuere (talk) 12:33, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose – American English also uses theatre, and it's long-standing convention to use that spelling for all categories per WP:COMMONALITY. This is one of many US theatre categories and its parent is Category:Theatres in the United States. There's an argument to be made that all the American categories should be renamed, but not just one by itself. But it's been discussed many times before. Mclay1 (talk) 12:43, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Template:Saitama-railstation-stub
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Obsolete stub cat with only the template remaining. AlphaBetaGamma (Talk/report any mistakes here) 11:26, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Government ministries of China
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Government ministries of China (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Government ministries of the People's Republic of China
- Propose renaming Category:Government ministries of the People's Republic of China (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Government ministries of China
- Nominator's rationale: Both these categories appear to be for identical purposes. All of the ministries are for the PRC not any other form of China. Category:Government ministries of China was created very recently so should be merged into the category with page history. The original category can be renamed to just use "China" since the article is at China and I'm not aware of anything it needs disambiguating from. Mclay1 (talk) 09:16, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge/rename per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:33, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Oppose Per Common name of countries. Nothing in this category is even related to Taiwan hence why there is Category:Government agencies of China parent cat vs Category:Government agencies of Taiwan. We don't use formal names of countries even for categories. Also, the cats for ministries have been moved to China in the title due to articles using China. The wrong category is PRC. Not China. PRC should be moved to China category. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 14:58, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- @WikiCleanerMan: PRC should be moved to China category. - That is exactly the rename proposal in the nomination. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:46, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- It says on top: Propose merging Category:Government ministries of China to Category:Government ministries of the People's Republic of China. I thought it was the opposite way around. I didn't see it for some reason. So, yes, Merge per nomination. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:50, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- @WikiCleanerMan: PRC should be moved to China category. - That is exactly the rename proposal in the nomination. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:46, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:17th-century Ukrainian politicians
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, the people in the category are more accurately described as hetman than as "politician" and the articles are already in Category:Hetmans of Zaporizhian Host. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:14, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Emigrants from Saint-Domingue to France
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: upmerge for now. underpopulated category SMasonGarrison 04:26, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Delete or merge, this one case was barely emigration, since Saint-Domingue was a French colony. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:09, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Japanese superhero films by decade
[edit]- Propose merging Category:1990s Japanese superhero films (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose merging Category:2000s Japanese superhero films (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose merging Category:2010s Japanese superhero films (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose merging Category:2020s Japanese superhero films (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: Per this. All entries may be transferred to Category:Japanese superhero films and then copied to the respective decade categories. The mistake I made in the previous CfD was nominating them individually, which I'm not making now. The lone opposer to the previous CfD is now blocked. Kailash29792 (talk) 02:47, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge Per nom. There seems to be 2 rather than 1 opposer in the previous CfD, but none offered any policy-based reasoning for why the cross-categorization of year + obscure genre is encyclopedic at all. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 03:08, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for voting in favour of merging. But I do not think superhero as a genre is obscure. Not even since 1978. Kailash29792 (talk) 11:57, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Dual merge also to Category:Japanese superhero films, for consistency with this other discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:14, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
Category:Fictional characters by medium and species

[edit]Category:Fictional garments
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Fictional garments to Category:Fictional costumes
- Nominator's rationale: Unclear distinction between the two categories. I would also support a reverse merge for similar reasons, and arguably that may be better, but the costumes category is older. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 23:54, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge or reverse merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:20, 8 November 2025 (UTC)

- Comment. The wording of the first 4 categories is strange. As in this other discussion, the Republic of Venice was a multi-ethnic empire with land in the Adriatic and Greece. Shouldn't inhabitants of these lands be better called Category:Greeks in the Republic of Venice, Category:Slavs in the Republic of Venice, Category:Albanians in the Republic of Venice? - Leaning Oppose for Category:Venetian Renaissance humanists, as Venetian Renaissance and Category:Venetian Renaissance exist. Also, "Venetian governors of Foo" seems like the most natural construction available. I feel similarly about Category:Venetian noble families, although if its parent categories Category:Republic of Venice families and Category:Republic of Venice nobility are to be moved to Category:Families from the Republic of Venice and Category:Nobility from the Republic of Venice as is proposed in the nomination above this one (and I do approve of those moves), Category:Noble families from the Republic of Venice might be fine. Ham II (talk) 07:04, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Leaning oppose too, because in several of these categories there are 'modern' Venice (post-1797) individuals. It may be better to create the 'FOO from the Republic of Venice' categories, where required. Sionk (talk) 14:26, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Sionk: in principle these categories should not contain post-1797 entries. Can you give some examples? Marcocapelle (talk) 14:41, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Beaing towards the top of your list, I had a look through Category:Venetian Jews and found at least 4 articles from well after 1797. Category:South American dragons
[edit]- Propose merging Category:South American dragons to Category:Dragons and Category:South American legendary creatures
- Nominator's rationale: Only 2 entries. WinstonDewey (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Rather merge all continent categories, as a trivial intersection. Stories about dragons mostly emerged long before the modern classification of continents existed. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:49, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge Per nom. I'm not sure if I agree with torching the entire category tree; dragons are in fact commonly sorted by country, as with European dragon and Chinese dragon and Korean dragon. It's just that not all countries are an encyclopedic cross-categorization. I suppose I could support renaming Category:Dragons by continent to Category:Dragons by region and merging the in-between subcategories that are continents. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 00:01, 8 November 2025 (UTC)

Category:Mythology in video games
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Mythology in video games to Category:Mythology in popular culture
- Nominator's rationale: After removing unnecessary pages, only 1 cat left, Category:Video games based on mythology. Makes this an unnecessary layer. Would only upmerge to cat above, the subcat is already in Category:Video games by source. WinstonDewey (talk) 21:10, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Assuming that the removal of unnecessary pages is not controversial, then merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:58, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Just so the context is here, there were only three pages. One belonged in Category:Video games based on mythology, one was a redirect to an Assassin's Creed character list entry, and the last was another Assassin's Creed character, but an article. WinstonDewey (talk) 05:37, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose While narrow, I believe that it is an encyclopedic cross-categorization, and Mythology in video games could be a notable article in its own right. Thus, I am not convinced it should be gotten rid of just for housekeeping reasons. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 00:06, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- I don't disagree that it could be valuable, there's just nothing there at the moment. I suppose the solution could be to review Category:Video games based on mythology for entries, but would be important to have a clear distinction between the categories (and which should be the parent of the other). The two obvious candidates I see in Category:Video games based on mythology are Category:God of War (franchise) and Category:Age of Mythology, but even there I could see debates about which one they go in (or if they go in both). They're clearly both based on mythology and also directly contain mythological elements, so I guess both? Also, could be Mythology in is not the right title and it should be something like Category:Video games about mythology. WinstonDewey (talk) 05:52, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- After checking further, I believe that this should go beyond video games and you may want to consider nominating the entire category tree of "Mythology in X" for merging as well as renaming any of its subcategories to "X based on mythology" rather than "mythology in X". They all seem to violate WP:NONDEF as-is. I would again oppose a merge for this one only because it's part of an established category tree, but would not necessarily oppose a wholesale merge/purge of all of them at once. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 17:49, 8 November 2025 (UTC)

Category:Wikipedia objectionable content
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: This seems a completely subjective grouping of articles. China, Black women, Chiropractic, American decline, Bikini, Hugo de Burgh, and the Coat of arms of Warsaw, rather surprised to be grouped together I guess. Nearly everything can be objectionable to someone, very unclear why these 892 articles are singled out. Fram (talk) 10:38, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Comment, the category is populated by Template:Censor. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:01, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Rename to Category:Wikipedia articles with potentially objectionable content. Valid category, but the name is understandably confusing. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 00:13, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- Dorsn´t change the subjective randomness of such a cat. Is the image of a non-veiled potentially objectionable? Nude buttocks on an old painting? An explanation of a "false" religion? Information about vaccines? Information about slavery in the US? The list is endless. Fram (talk) 07:49, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Fram: while these are valid questions, I think the questions have more to do with the usage of Template:Censor than with the category. It is a valid maintenance category consisering that Template:Censor exists. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:01, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
- I don´t get how "but it´s populated by a template" make the concerns any less valid, or why that would a reason to keep the category. You seem to imply that the template is incorrectly used, but give no indication on which type of articles it would be an acceptable category. Perhaps the template needs a discussion as well, but thatns no reason to keep this category. Fram (talk) 08:58, 8 November 2025 (UTC)

Category:American Jews of East Asian descent
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Delete and manually merge with appropriate category for each entry per WP:NARROWCAT. Omnis Scientia (talk) 07:59, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Delete. In this 2010 discussion, it was decided to rename Fooian American Jews to American people of Fooian-Jewish descent, a format preferred to American Jews of Fooian descent. In this 2019 discussion, it was decided to similarly merge Category:American Jews by national origin to Category:American people of Jewish descent. This discussion is also relevant to regional descent of American Jews. I think it is clear and consensual that both formats would serve the same purpose and that only one is necessary. Also, although it is probably frequent for American Jews to have both Jewish and non-Jewish ancestry, their non-Jewish ancestry is irrelevant to their being Jewish; that leaves empty the need for having Jews of Fooian descent categories that wouldn't fit in people of Fooian-Jewish descent categories. Let's take the imaginary case of an American, themselves Jewish, child of a Jewish Polish mother and a non-Jewish Chinese father. For this fictitious person, American people of Polish-Jewish descent and American people of Chinese descent may be defining, but American Jews of Chinese descent is not. Category:Films shot by Amit Roy
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Non-defining. We have no established scheme of categorizing films for the identity of their cinematographers -- this new thing is the only "films shot by X" category that exists for any cinematographer on the entire planet. And furthermore, Amit Roy doesn't even seem to have a biographical article at all, so one can hardly claim that he's somehow a special case of greater ubernotability than any other cinematographer in the history of film who doesn't have one of these. Even worse, one of the three films filed here has three cinematographers listed in its infobox, but has been shot-by catted only for Amit Roy and not for the other two (which is just further proof that we don't categorize films for this). Bearcat (talk) 07:50, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Delete, while on the one hand it's surprising someone hasn't created more "Films shot by..." categories (considering the number of notable cinematographers), in the instance of Amit Roy we have no article for him and no proof that the categorisation is appropriate (other than a mention of his name in the film Infobox). Non-defining fact, in this instance. Sionk (talk) 14:43, 8 November 2025 (UTC)

[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Standardize phrasing with similar categories, such as Category:African-American United States senators and Category:African-American United States representatives. Woko Sapien (talk) 21:14, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
- Question: wouldn't Cherokee United States senators/representatives be a better name? The Cherokee Nation does not have a seat in the U.S. Congress. These were senators and representatives from U.S. states who were Cherokee. In fact, there is a seat for a Cherokee delegate to the United States House of Representatives, which is non-voting, established in a 1835 treaty, but it is a different seat. Place Clichy (talk) 22:13, 6 November 2025 (UTC)

- Keep. Helpful categorization that fits into the larger category tree. Also not the sort of trivial cross-categorization that NARROWCAT refers to. Star Garnet (talk) 23:45, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge a reasonable way to subcategorize individual mammals would be by (traditional) orders, not various clades in between orders and class Mammalia (marsupials are no longer recognized as a single order, but were traditionally. Category:Individual ungulates has just two subcategories corresponding to orders, and should be merge as well as the glires category). Plantdrew (talk) 17:57, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Per WP:CATSPECIFIC, it should, if anything, be the other way, adding a several tiers that are helpful but unlikely to be known outside of biological circles (individual ungulates and carnivorans as individual ferungulates, individual primates and glires as individual Euarchontoglires, individual ferungulates and Euarchontoglires as individual boreoeutherians, individual boreoeutherians and proboscideans as individual eutherians, individual eutherians and marsupials as individual mammals). I'm neutral as to whether that degree of specificity is desirable, but I'm pretty confident less specificity is not the answer here. The trouble with categorizing individual mammals is the hierarchy is so in flux and, in some cases, debatable (should individual cetaceans be under individual even-toed ungulates, or should they be subcats of individual artiodactyls, which in turn would be a subcat of individual ungulates along with individual odd-toed ungulates). Few agree on a specific set of orders, and going that route likely leads to the most categorization of any option, with many orders with few individual members. Category:Monsters
[edit]- Propose splitting Category:Monsters to Category:Monsters and Category:Female monsters
- Propose splitting Category:Fictional monsters to Category:Fictional monsters and Category:Fictional female monsters
- Nominator's rationale: I'm usually not a fan of splitting categories by gender, but I am certain that female monsters are a defining cross-categorization, as evidenced by such creatures as the sphinx or Grendel's mother, among others. I made a monster girl article a while back, which, while it's only about a specific type of humanoid female monster, demonstrates at least some standalone notability. An article called female monster (or Monsters and femininity)? is likely to also be notable. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 15:15, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
- Keep for now: While I wouldn't if there are gender studies or feminist interpretations on femineity or how these characters are treated. Monsters that are more tropes or characters like Medusa or Kuchisake-onna are complicated. As they aren't real, the Medusa article just says they are "described as female" or are "the spirit of a woman" and I don't know how seriously they are defined as actually being female or male or anything. Andrzejbanas (talk) 20:27, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- One direct example in RS is here, where the Kuchisake-onna is described as "a well-dressed, but violently insecure young woman". This article describes the Greek sphinx as having "the haunches of a lion, the wings of a great bird, and horribly, the face and breast of a woman" and while it is not fully a woman, it's nevertheless described as female with feminine pronouns. There's also the classic Scylla who begins as a female nymph before being transformed into a monster, but nevertheless retains the female connotation. Siren (mythology) are another example in which their femininity are important, as they lure men onto the rocks and make them drown. Overall, there are demonstrably sufficient examples of both mythological and fictional monsters that are defined by being female monsters, specifically. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 22:00, 7 November 2025 (UTC)

[edit]- Propose splitting Category:Godzilla characters to Category:Godzilla (franchise) characters and Category:Godzilla (franchise) kaiju
- Nominator's rationale: The category mostly contains monsters, but also contains human character articles like Miki Saegusa. I think that the subject of Godzilla kaiju is still an encyclopedic cross-categorization. This category can be moved to "Godzilla kaiju" and then be made a subcategory of the characters category, which would not be a member of the kaiju parent category. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 14:47, 6 November 2025 (UTC)

Category:Defunct football clubs in the Soviet Union
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: This is a category with unclear name – are these articles for football clubs that became defunct during the Soviet Union or football clubs in the Soviet Union that are now defunct? In both cases, the usefulness is limited. All current entries in the category were also from the Ukrainian SSR. Possible second merge target could therefore be Category:Defunct football clubs in Ukraine. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 16:38, 21 October 2025 (UTC)
- Just purge, many aren't former, they are currently existing. Only leave the ones that were disestablished in the Soviet Union. I don't think we have other category like Category:Football clubs in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic for football clubs established in a certain period in a certain country subdivision. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:29, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- Possibly they have already been purged but I cannot find any active football clubs in the category. For Category:Football clubs in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, I find it more a question of being active than established and would say grouping by Soviet republic makes sense as there were specific competitions per Soviet republic. Kaffet i halsen (talk) 10:46, 23 October 2025 (UTC)

- Merge to Category:Individual mammals. Unless you can demonstrate it's an encyclopedic cross-categorization, it doesn't seem necessary, though Category:Individual male horses may be an encyclopedic one. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 15:27, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Zxcvbnm and LaundryPizza03: Does the equivalent category on Wikimedia Commons demonstrate that this is an "encyclopedic cross-categorization?"
- I thought this category would be just as "encyclopedic" as Category:Men or Category:Individual male horses.
- But I'd prefer not to put the word "individual" in these categories' names. We don't need to rename Category:Men to Category:Individual men. Jarble (talk) 17:14, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
- Commons has different use cases and I'd say that sorting by animal gender may be more useful there for ease of finding specific pictures. In Wikipedia, it must be a defining attribute, so standards are different (and more stringent) for what should and should not be a category. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 22:04, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Keep – This is the counterpart to Category:Female mammals. While it does contain a number of individual mammals, it's also a topic category for subcategories and articles about male mammals. The biological study of sex in mammals, and the different cultural uses and depictions of male and female mammals seem like notable subjects, and both categories have enough contents to justify their existence. The individual animals are already categorised in relevant individual animal categories; they can also be in this one. Category:Individual male mammals could be created as a valid subcategory. If the category is renamed, the male topic subcategories should be reparented to Category:Male. Mclay1 (talk) 15:51, 6 November 2025 (UTC)

[edit]- Propose merging Category:Anthropomorphic comics to Category:Anthropomorphism
- Nominator's rationale: I do believe this is a WP:NARROWCAT situation, and the name is also confusing. Regardless of what happens to the subcategories, this isn't likely necessary. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 03:25, 6 November 2025 (UTC)

- Propose merging: Category:Immigration to the United Kingdom by country of origin to Category:Ethnic groups in the United Kingdom
- Propose deleting: Category:Immigration to France from the former Yugoslavia (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: Misleading title. These categories contain topic articles about ethnic communities, e.g. Haitians in France or Lebanese people in the United Kingdom. These articles are not only about immigration per se, but also about diaspora communities, descendants, culture etc. Place Clichy (talk) 16:38, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
- Merge but to a different target, namely to Category:Diasporas in France and Category:Diasporas in the United Kingdom respectively. As nom says, the articles are about diasporas. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:14, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
- For the reasons exposed at another discussion on this page, I believe we shouldn't make such a difference between "ethnic groups" and "diasporas". Making the difference implies that we judge who is indigenous and who is an outsider, who is more or less pure, or has a better right to be in a place. It is often a very hard call to make and often breaks NPOV. In the case of the UK for instance, even the Celts, the Anglo-Saxons and the Normans came through migration. However, a merge to the diasporas categories would be better than a status quo. Place Clichy (talk) 10:49, 30 October 2025 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: This is a niche phrase that isn't really generally recognizable by the average English reader, there's no comparable category for "Habsburg Austrians" or "Habsburg Hungarians", so we should use a descriptive phrase "Serbs in the Habsburg monarchy" instead (WP:NDESC). --Joy (talk) 19:58, 5 November 2025 (UTC)

Category:Video games with low poly graphics
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Video games with low poly graphics to Category:Retro-style 3D video games
- Nominator's rationale: As per the multiple attempts to merge or delete this category in the past, it suffers from a WP:SUBJECTIVECAT problem as well as an issue where it's not clear that it refers to games intentionally designed to look like a retro 3D game unless one reads the category's description. Theoretically, any PS1 game etc. could fit within this category's current title.
- It's also clear, however, that there is consensus this is a useful category. Therefore, I suggest renaming it in a way that it's consistent with Category:Retro-style video games and also makes clear that it's about games with a purposeful 3D retro style. As a bonus, there wouldn't have to be a debate as to what constitutes "low-poly". ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 18:23, 14 October 2025 (UTC)
- Note: An alternate possible name would be Category:Retro-style video games with 3D graphics. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 18:27, 14 October 2025 (UTC)
- Comment This is an interesting proposal and is consistent with its parent category. I still like the current name, but I'd like to know what other editors think. --NoonIcarus (talk) 18:35, 14 October 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. Retro-style 3D is a much vaguer term and will most often be original research. For some, Duke Nukem 3D represents the cutting edge of this group, while for others it's late PS1 games, and for some even PS2 titles. Others would say that boomer shooters or Doom-like (corridor shooters) are retro-style 3D games due to game design. Also it doesn't look that media/sources tend to use the term "retro-style 3D" regularly, and moreover, there is no separate article describing this concept. While "low poly" graphics/games is a commonly used and applied specifically to modern stylisation. It is unlikely that anyone would retrospectively refer to individual games from the 1990s as low-poly games, but it can be said that the entire 3D era was low-poly. And I don't think that means we should put the entire PS1 catalogue here. If really necessary, we could add words like "modern" or "stylisation" to the current name, but I still think this is unnecessary. Solidest (talk) 20:10, 15 October 2025 (UTC)
- "Low poly" would be at least as vague if not moreso. If you oppose this I am not sure why you would support keeping it as is. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 04:50, 16 October 2025 (UTC)

Category:Deaths on Mount Everest

- Then I would rather prefer a double upmerge to Category:Indonesian people of Arab descent and Category:Indonesian politicians of Asian descent. Category:Indonesian people of West Asian descent I plan to propose to merge to Category:Indonesian people of Asian descent similar to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 August 17#Category:American people of West Asian descent Hassan697 (talk) 22:35, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
- If the West Asian descent tree as a whole is going to be merged to Asian descent then the Indonesian subcats will be moved with it. That does not change the outcome of this discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:35, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
- A parallel merge to Category:Indonesian people of Arab descent seems ok, also considering there is an article about Arab Indonesians. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:40, 28 October 2025 (UTC)

- Merge to Category:Indonesian people of Arab descent per discussion above. If the Arab identity is defining for these individuals, then this is how it should be reflected in categories. The intersection with politics if trivial per WP:OCEGRS, and all these articles must already be in more precise politician categories. In the spirit of consensus, I would prefer a double merge, with Category:Indonesian politicians of Asian descent as a second target, to a status quo, but I don't feel that even this intersection is really defining for these articles. - @Marcocapelle and Hassan697: I suggested an upmerge to Category:Indonesian people of Arab descent, because I see no evidence than the triple intersection of being Indonesian, Arab, and a politician is anything other than trivial. What do you think of this alternative? I would say that a second merge target in the politicians tree is not necessary, because individuals defined as politicians are most probably already defined by a more precise political office or orientation, and by WP:FINALRUNG they should be, but this can be manually checked. [edit]Category:Río de la Plata
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: This seems to be a grab bag of anything and anyone associated with this estuary. A cursory search finds no other comparable category for any other estuary. Clarityfiend (talk) 22:19, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- Keep, but decategorise articles. I was the one who created the Category:Río de la Plata back in 2013. My original idea was very simple: categorize articles that are relevant for it, such as The Battle of the River Plate (film), Barra del Indio; or notable tributary rivers that flow directly into the Río de la Plata, such as Santa Lucía River or Rosario River (Uruguay). Also, obviously, the Category:Islands of the Río de la Plata. Then, there are at least 80 articles that must be decategorized straight away. I propose myself for that task, if necessary. And then, the Category:Río de la Plata will be a real, decent category, such as Category:Firth of Forth, Best, --Fadesga (talk) 23:51, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- That sounds as a very reasonable solution. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:46, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
- AND: there are proper categories for many of those articles, such as Category:People from the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, Category:Governors of the Río de la Plata, etc. So I'd place a note on top of the Category:Río de la Plata requesting to use the corresponding history-related categories. --Fadesga (talk) 10:27, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
- Well. There it is: the updated version of this category, with its note on top. Most of the articles within this category are of geographical nature. Best, --Fadesga (talk) 18:04, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
- Withdraw nomination now that it's less overgrown and there are subcategories, though I don't believe cities and towns should be included (as in the case of Category:Firth of Forth [I did remove one village from there]). Clarityfiend (talk) 00:49, 6 November 2025 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: rename, the articles in the category predominantly refer to them as peoples rather than as communities. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:16, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- True, but this would currently make it inconsistent with all siblings in Category:Muslim communities in Asia and Category:Muslim communities in Europe. Some others could be renamed by the same rationale, e.g. Category:Muslim communities of Russia which holds only peoples, and Category:Muslim communities of the Philippines which is predominantly peoples. However, some others such as Category:Muslim communities of Lebanon hold populated places. Maybe split to a separate hierarchy for Muslim peoples if this goes through and gains some like-named siblings. – Fayenatic London 22:58, 5 November 2025 (UTC)

Category:Fathers of Medicare
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Category for a non-defining characteristic. These people did not work together collectively to develop Canada's health insurance system, but rather each acted on their own in some capacity in different political bodies at different times, so they don't constitute a defined or organized group that get covered or analyzed in aggregate -- "father of medicare" is just a term that some of them have been labelled with, not an encyclopedically notable concept. Even the "head" article is based entirely on sources that individually ascribe the people with that term rather than sources which cover them all together as a group, so it doesn't demonstrate that there's a categorizable concept here either. Category:Rivers with fish ladders
[edit]- Propose Deleting Category:Rivers with fish ladders
- Nominator's rationale: WP:TRIVIALCAT and WP:NONDEFINING
- A Fish ladder is a series of pools going up the side of a dam or other structures that allow fish to move past the obstacle. We don't categorize rivers by dams, so it seems trivial to categorize them by an accessory structure and this seems akin to Category:Rivers with bridges. (Incidentally, I went to create a category for the fish ladders themselves, but the only article I found was Pitlochry fish ladder.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:30, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- If deleted, it may be useful to add a list section in article Fish ladder. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:13, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- No objection to that, but it would take some effort because most of the rivers link to dam articles that then mention having a fish ladder. RevelationDirect (talk) 01:59, 6 November 2025 (UTC)

- Propose merging Category:Namibian Jews (1 P) to Category:African Jews
- Propose merging Category:Saint Helenian Jews (1 P) to Category:African Jews
- Nominator's rationale: merge for now, only one article in each of these categories, this is not helpful for navigation. No objection to recreation any of these categories when multiple articles are available to be added. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:46, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

- Merge the first 3 per nom, keep Category:Saint Helenian Jews. The category recognizing the distinct ethnic group is Jews and Judaism in <country>, and pertinent articles are already there. Pierre Pascau does not deserve to be in any Judaism-related category seen the article, leaving the Mauritian category empty. I suggest keeping the Saint Helenian category for Saul Solomon, because there is no parent category for Judaism in Saint Helena and there is probably no need for one. Category:Cyberpunk music
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Nothing seems to reference this anywhere and i'm skeptical there are any unifying properties to cyberpunk _music_ 157.131.68.73 (talk) 17:16, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Most often, cyberpunk music is now understood as a subgenre of synthwave, influenced by EBM and darkwave. However, the internet is also full of ambient mixes with a post-apocalyptic sound that are labeled cyberpunk. The category apparently includes soundtracks to cyberpunk-themed works and various music with a similar aesthetic. Cyberpunk#Music describes music associated with the cyberpunk theme rather than a defined genre. It also seems odd to see Gary Numan’s album there, as his work predates the concept of cyberpunk music in its current sense. Lady Gaga’s album, on the other hand, appears to be included only because of its cover art, with no musical connection at all. I believe that unless there is an article—or at least a section—with reliable sources defining the subject from a musical point of view (beyond simply being “synthesizer-heavy”), it would be better to delete the category. - Comment: essentially, this is the same category as the Category:Salon holders from the Russian Empire, and all articles in the later category, can be placed in the former. The only reason there are two categories, is because one user dislike "Russian" and believe it is more correct to use the term "Russian Empire" - and personally, I don't know which category name is most correct. Perhaps Category:Russian salon-holders should be a subcategory of the Category:Salon holders from the Russian Empire and not the other way around, I don't know. But essentially: these two categories are the same category.--Aciram (talk) 22:15, 18 October 2025 (UTC)

- Delete. There Is No Apparent Reason To Categorize Health Care Providers By Type Of Care Provided. Place Clichy (talk) 02:57, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- I don't understand the rationale. There are tons of subcategories for healthcare type. Here's a few at random that are more specific wrt the type of health care than behavior health care:
- Category:Cancer organizations based in the United States
- Category:Plastic surgery organizations
- Category:Renal dialysis organizations in the United States
- Category:Children's hospitals
- Category:NCI-designated cancer centers Crs5827 (talk) 04:19, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Maybe it is the notion of "behavioral healthcare provider", capitalized or not, which somehow escapes immediate understanding on several accounts. Wouldn't some or all of these organizations fit in Category:Mental health organizations based in the United States or Category:Psychology organizations based in the United States? Place Clichy (talk) 15:37, 5 November 2025 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: Making a category this vague has caused it to be miscategorized. That should enable them to be properly categorized with nothing "outside" a category. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 08:04, 2 November 2025 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:Comedy drama to Category:Comedy-drama
- Nominator's rationale: All subcategories under this category use the hyphenated version of the term, "Comedy-drama". Matching the main category name could improve parity and create a better precedent for article ledes moving forward, for which I've also started a Requested Move on the mainspace article at Talk:Comedy drama#Requested move 25 October 2025. You may find more of my arguments for and against this there. Drunk Experiter (she/her) (talk) 05:43, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
- Let's wait for the outcome of the RM and follow that outcome for the category name. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:22, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
- The category should match the article, whatever that ends up being. The subcategories should remain hyphenated regardless because comedy drama is being used as a modifier. Mclay1 (talk) 13:58, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
- Comedy-drama with the hyphen is how I've seen this genre referred to in numerous articles, such as reviews, about films and television series. Pyxis Solitary (yak). ⚢ 08:06, 28 October 2025 (UTC)

Category:Anthropophagy
[edit]- Propose deleting Category:Anthropophagy (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose renaming Category:Mythological anthropophages to Category:Mythological human-eaters
- Nominator's rationale: Anthropophage is a specific member of a race of cannibals in Shakespeare's plays, a neologism, and should not be used to refer to human-eaters in general, making this category misleading and unnecessary. It's possible Man-eating animal and its category may have to be merged into Category:Carnivory. The subcategory "mythological anthropophages" should be renamed "Mythological human-eaters" accordingly. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 07:53, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose – The words did not originate with Shakespeare, and the assertion that it "should not be used to refer to human-eaters in general" seems unfounded. OED defines anthropophagus/anthropophage as "A person who eats human flesh; a cannibal. Also: a member of any human-like race of creatures said to eat human flesh." And anthropophagy as "The practice of eating human flesh; cannibalism." It can also be used more generally to refer to the eating of human flesh by other creatures. Our Anthropophagy dab page provides a number of meanings. The current names are fine and no reasoning has been given as to why the first category should be deleted rather than renamed. If there is a better name that is more commonly understood, I wouldn't be opposed to that. Mclay1 (talk) 09:34, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- It seems by all respects to be a neologism, but even if we assume it isn't, both the OED definition and Encyclopedia Britannica calls it synonymous with cannibalism rather than the eating of humans by non-humans. Either way, the same result occurs, the word should not be used at all on Wikipedia because we already have Category:Cannibalism and Category:Fictional cannibals. Its meaning is unacceptably vague to be used as such a specific thing as non-humans eating humans. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 09:44, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. It's an old word (far older than "cannibalism", in fact) and has always been used for "eating humans", as that is what it means. Hence it's a parent category of Category:Human cannibalism and also encompasses animals and fictitious beings who eat humans, all logical enough. Gawaon (talk) 11:48, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- Whether it's older than cannibalism doesn't matter; it's not the common name for it.
- As for the argument that it encompasses all animals and fictitious beings who eat humans, that's a claim made with zero evidence. As said above, the sources show that it is synonymous with cannibalism. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 12:48, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- I don't know which sources you have consulted, as you didn't quote any. That it is inevitably "synonymous with cannibalism" is nonsense; Mclay1 already pointed this out above. There's Crocodylus anthropophagus, a human-eating crocodile (but not a cannibal). In Greek mythology there were the anthropophagous Cyclopes and Laestrygonians – mythical creatures eating human flesh which could hardly be called "cannibalistic" since they weren't strictly human and didn't eat their own kind. Gawaon (talk) 16:06, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- Above I mentioned the Encyclopedia Britannica, as well as Oxford English Dictionary. Various other dictionaries also say the same thing. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 20:08, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- The shorter a dictionary entry, the more likely it'll be incomplete. Encyclopedia Britannica says "cannibalism, Also known as: anthropophagy" – they don't even have a separate entry for that word, so of course you won't derive much insight from that. I don't know what the OED says, since it's paywalled. Collins Dictionary says "anthropophagic: practising or characterized by the eating of human flesh; cannibalistic". So it's a synonyms per the part after the semicolon, but not strictly per the part before it. wikt:anthropophagy says: "The act or practice of eating human flesh, especially in the context of human cannibalism" – "especially", of course, meaning that there are other contexts too (such as human-eating animals or mythical beings). Gawaon (talk) 21:15, 2 November 2025 (UTC)

- Merge Category:Anthropophagy to Category:Cannibalism and Category:Mythological anthropophages to Category:Mythological cannibals. Anthropophages are either synonymous to cannibals or a specific subset of it. In the former case it is a matter of WP:OVERLAPCAT, in the latter case the articles in the category do not describe the subjects as anthropophages per se. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:45, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- The problem is that most in Category:Mythological anthropophages are not actually cannibals. As such I think it should either be renamed to a more accurate name such as "human-eaters" or outright deleted, not merged. Similarly, "man-eating animals" in Category:Anthropophagy are not cannibals, so I'm not sure merging would make much sense versus deletion. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 20:23, 2 November 2025 (UTC)

- I think Zxcvbnm said so: "The problem is that most in Category:Mythological anthropophages are not actually cannibals." Marcocapelle (talk) 17:09, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- But they also stated that they are "human-eaters" (hence "anthropophages" to used the learned term), thus kinda refuting their own premise that human-eaters/anthropophages and cannibals are the same thing. Gawaon (talk) 08:55, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- Again, I am stating how it is currently used in the encyclopedia, not how I believe it SHOULD be used (which is right now being debated). Trying to find contradictions in my own arguments and use them against me is akin to insinuating I am not a competent editor and an ad hominem attack, we should focus on the facts here. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 09:46, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- Sure, then I'll just repeat the factual point that, as far as I can tell, nobody here has doubted that the creatures listed in "Category:Mythological anthropophages" are indeed anthropophages (eaters of humans). Gawaon (talk) 11:20, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

- @Zxcvbnm: it would be helpful for me when you would give some examples of articles in the category that are not about cannibals but are about human-eaters. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:36, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- Man-eating animal is about man-eating animals, not cannibals. To Serve Man (short story) is about man-eating aliens, not cannibals. That doesn't leave much left really. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 22:39, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- Ah ok, so it is about the acting character not being human. So as those articles are not about cannibals, they can't be about anthropophages either, because anthropophages are either synonymous to or a subset of cannibals. Then articles about cannibalism can be moved to that category and what is left can either both be deleted or renamed to man eating as nominated. Deletion is surely an option too, as a not very defining characteristic of creatures. But let's start with moving articles to Category:Cannibalism and Category:Mythological cannibals. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:09, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
- "Anthropophages are either synonymous to or a subset of cannibals"? I'll add a "citation needed" to that. What about Crocodylus anthropophagus? Is it a cannibal? And see wikt:ἀνθρωποφάγος: it means person/human-eating, but says nothing whatsoever about whether the eater themselves is a human (which would indeed make them a cannibal) or not. Mythologies are full of creatures that are anthropophagous but no cannibals, such as the Minotaur and Pishacha. Gawaon (talk) 08:29, 5 November 2025 (UTC)

Category:Mythological hematophages
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Mythological hematophages to Category:Mythological blood-drinkers
- Nominator's rationale: "Hematophage" is a scientific term for an actual bloodsucking animal. This risks conflating legend with scientific fact, as drinking blood for nutrients is different than consuming magical "vital essence" of a person. I propose moving it to a non-scientific name. This would also imply removal from Category:Hematophages, which is only for real animals. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 07:44, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- Whether or not renamed, I think the category remains a valid subcategory of Category:Hematophages. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:53, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- Support keeping this as a subcat of Category:Hematophages regardless of name decision. WinstonDewey (talk) 16:58, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- I don't think it's a valid subcategory. The parent categories of Hematophages make it clear that it refers to actual animals in real life, not mythological beings. Just because both drink blood doesn't make one a natural subcategory of the other. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 20:10, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- This logic would invalidate tons of animal category trees where X in popular culture or Fictional X is a perfectly reasonable subcat of the specific animal or group of animals. The mythical portion makes the distinction clear, so I don't see how someone would mistake these as real creatures. WinstonDewey (talk) 16:08, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Not all mythological beings are animals. Some are spirits, undead, etc. Instant failure of WP:SUBCAT. It's not equivalent to, say, Beavers and Fictional beavers, in which they are all guaranteed to be the same sort of animal. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 16:25, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Then the solution is to purge the non-animal/creature pages to a Category:Mythological blood-drinkers and have Category:Mythological hematophages as a subcat of both it and Category:Hematophages. Looking through, I see at least 5 animal pages. Some may also belong in Category:Vampirism. WinstonDewey (talk) 21:19, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
