Temporary account IP viewer granted

[edit]
The temporary account IP viewer logo, composed of the Wikipedia globe with a user and an IP address

Hello, TarnishedPath. Per your request, your account has been granted temporary-account-viewer rights. You are now able to reveal the IP addresses of individuals using temporary accounts that are not visible to the general public. This is very sensitive information that is only to be used to aid in anti-abuse workflows. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer for more information on this user right. It is important to remember:

  • You must not share IP address data with someone who does not have the same access permissions unless disclosure is permissible as per guidelines listed at Foundation:Policy:Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
  • Access must not be used for political control, to apply pressure on editors, or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. There must be a valid reason to investigate a temporary user. Note that using multiple temporary accounts is not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of policies (for example, block or ban evasion).

It is also important to note that the following actions are logged for others to see:

  • When a user accepts the preference that enables or disables IP reveal for their account.
  • Revealing an IP address of a temporary account.
  • Listing the temporary accounts that are associated with one or more IP addresses (using the CIDR notation format).

Remember, even if a user is violating policy, avoid revealing personal information if possible. Use temporary account usernames rather than disclosing IP addresses directly, or give information such as same network/not same network or similar. If you do not want the user right anymore then please ask me or another administrator and it will be removed for you. You may also voluntarily give up access at any time by visiting Special:Preferences. Happy editing! —Femke 🐦 (talk) 16:52, 9 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'd appreciate it if you could explain your reasoning and how were the apparent WP:!votes and WP:AADPs were weighed (per WP:CONS, WP:RMCLOSE). --Joy (talk) 10:59, 31 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Joy,
All of the support !votes argued primary topic. Your oppose !vote stated otherwise and seemed to me heavily reliant on wikinav stats. While I'm not super experienced as a closer, I've been involved in and closed enough RMs to have seen that the community generally doesn't think as much of arguments based on wikinav stats. If you'd had even one other editor agreeing with your position I would given quite a bit of thought to relisting instead of moving. However, given the numerical superiority of the support !votes and your part reliance on wikinav I felt consensus was for a move. TarnishedPathtalk 11:15, 31 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just to give a bit further rationale for my longterm significance argument, because Joy is characterizing it as a "vote", I believe that the use of "Jolene" in people's names would run afoul of WP:PTM, so they can't be counted as equivalent primary topics by longterm significance. Furthermore, Jolene (name) was largely popularized by the song, which would imply the song has even more longterm significance than the name itself. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 22:52, 31 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just letting you both know that I got a similar message from Joy over at my talk page. Thanks, 1isall (he/him) (talk | contribs) 00:35, 1 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Your input was also an assertion, but it was hardly the most terse one, so please don't feel called out. Of course you're aware that we disagree on the interpretation of PTM, but at this point I'm more worried about the general trend of what is documented as our rules being largely ignored in these processes overall. --Joy (talk) 14:38, 1 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Richard III closure

[edit]

Hi, TarnishedPath. Happy New Year! I was wondering if you could provide a rationale for the move request closure at Talk:Richard_III_of_England#Requested_move_25_December_2025. Surtsicna (talk) 13:38, 1 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Surtsicna,
Happy New Year to you also.
Regarding the close, there were four supports for the proposal with those supports either referencing WP:PTOPIC or WP:NCROY (one editor argued WP:CONSISTENT). There were 6 opposes, who argued WP:CONSISTENT, that a name change would cause confusion given the play and that neither the play nor the royal are the PTOPIC (TheodoresTomfooleries presented a wikiview analysis in an attempt to contradict one editor but that analysis did not show enough of a difference between the king and the play for the king to be considered the PTOPIC). A number of the opposes also made reference to be previous close, where editors opposed on the basis of consistency and clarity. In that discussion both sides also argued PTOPIC, as was the case in this discussion. Given that no policy position prevailed, this came down to which side had a numerical superiority. TarnishedPathtalk 20:09, 1 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! Would it be possible to have that rationale affixed to the closing comment, for reference purposes in the case of any future discussions? Surtsicna (talk) 20:16, 1 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Surtsicna no problem. It will be later today when I'm back home in front of my PC. TarnishedPathtalk 23:47, 1 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. What should be done about the Richard III redirect? If the consensus is that the king is not the primary meaning of Richard III, my understanding is that Richard III should not redirect to the article about the king but to Richard III (disambiguation) per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Surtsicna (talk) 11:39, 2 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Surtsicna, thanks for jogging my memory on that. Your assessment is correct, although I am at this point very tired and there's probably some other small detail I've missed. TarnishedPathtalk 12:42, 2 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

It was clearly decided a while ago that Richard III of England is the primary topic, see the talk page at "Richard III (disambiguation)". PatGallacher (talk) 01:15, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

The consensus from a while ago has apparently changed, @PatGallacher. The discussion at Talk:Richard_III_of_England#Requested_move_25_December_2025 has ended with the consensus that the king is not the clear primary topic. Surtsicna (talk) 01:21, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The recent move request decided not to move the article, but it did not take a clear decision about whether or not there was a primary topic. Given that this is a contentious and complex issue, I suggest any change would require an RFC, or a Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion discussion, or the like. PatGallacher (talk) 01:29, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Without a clear consensus that the king is the primary topic, the redirect should point to the disambiguation page per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Surtsicna (talk) 01:33, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

The redirect Richard III has been listed at redirects for discussion to determine whether its use and function meets the redirect guidelines.
