    Admin Abuse

    [edit]

I have edited here for 20 years and have seen my fair share of discussions and conflict, although admittedly I have not been very active if the most contentious areas or pages on Wikipedia. But when I think back to my time here, I can't really think of that many "abuses of power" by admins. Like, I understand that some admins have had long running issues with civility or the like ("death by a thousand cuts"), but even the most challenging admin issues seem to get resolved and we move on. I wonder if anyone has a list of like the top 10 abuses of admin power? The reason I ask it that it seems like one of the most common threads for people to oppose easier standards for admins is this fear of abuse. I wonder if this fear is abstract, or rooted in real impacts caused by abusive actions taken by admins. Just curious if any admin abuse had any quantifiable impacts to our ability to write, regulate, and manage Wikipedia. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 18:46, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if ranking abuses would be appropriate, but you can see the list of all for-cause desysopped admins at Wikipedia:Former administrators/reason/for cause, and can suss out under-a-cloud resignations at Wikipedia:Former administrators/reason/resigned by ctrl+f'ing for "related". It's in the eye of the beholder which desysops were most deserved. The scope of reasons people have been desysopped ranges for "Refused to answer questions about something that wasn't even that big of a deal" to things that also got people banned. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 19:05, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
