Question from Kamiri Sammy (12:02, 24 September 2025)

[edit]

Hi, how do I create a citation successfully? --Kamiri Sammy (talk) 12:02, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kamiri Sammy: Please see Help:Referencing for beginners. If you have any further questions please let me know. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 16:21, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Kamiri Sammy (talk) 08:52, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't follow the TFD at {{Culture of Italy}} et al., but something seems to have gone sideways at Italian comics. I fixed the navbox for you, but I don't see a link to Italian comics in the replacement, {{Italy topics}}. Is this still a work in progress of some kind? It appears that the result of the TFD was "merge", but if the comics article was missed in the merge, were other links missed as well? This report shows a lot of inconsistency. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:44, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonesey95: The Italian comics article was a manual edit by me and I clearly just didn't pay enough attention, my bad. As the discussion was "merge", I simply just converted existing culture templates to the topics ones, I didn't see if they were actually on the topics navboxes, since that's not my decision to make - I was just following consensus at the TfD. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 17:14, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"Merge" usually means that the resulting template would have all of the features and links of the resulting template. That usually requires editing of the target template. If the template was to simply be redirected to the target, the TFD outcome would have been "Redirect". – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:44, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonesey95: The other thing I forgot to mention is Template:Editnotices/Page/Template:Italy topics, apparently it's too long. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 17:50, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that seems to contradict WP:BIDIRECTIONAL, as did edits like this one that made the report of transclusions without links longer. I don't have an answer for you. It looks like the TFD did not analyze the differences between all of the pairs of templates, instead looking at only the pair for Albania. The WP:TRAINWRECK that Moxy predicted appears to have come to pass. I didn't look at any of the other "merged" (really redirected, apparently) sidebar templates, but I suspect that some of them suffered a similar fate. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:53, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonesey95: WP:BIDIRECTIONAL was already being violated with the culture templates, and I wasn't really aware of the policy BIDIRECTIONAL until you just stated it now. The other thing is individually reviewing every transclusion to check whether Template:Italy topics applies or if a more specific template should be used is a time consuming process (which I can't really be asked to do), and a simple find and replace using some clever JWB rules is a lot easier. (P.S. I'm not online tomorrow and maybe day after cos of Golu) —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 20:10, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't actually want to perform the template merge so that the links are preserved per the guidelines, it is OK to leave them in the holding cell for someone who is willing to do so. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:06, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Have to think of what links our best for our readers.... have to remember those at the merger talk don't actually edit the articles in question and have no clue about the value of each article. Rule of thumb is top level articles in country nav templates so is still useful as outlined at WP:NAV-WITHIN. As for WP:BIDIRECTIONAL it is only used for pop culture type articles..... academic articles just don't follow mass link spam of this nature because they're generally better organized. Most of these deleted templates will simply be recreated over time as people will think that they are missing. We have people that all they do is make templates and we have people all that they do is be involved in discussions about templates. Moxy🍁 22:20, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonesey95: I think this is a much deeper structural issue. Looking at something like for the Netherlands or France, we see this issue is present as well. The intersection between those who know enough about the countries in question to decide which links to use, those who can use AWB/JWB to replace the templates, and those who have the time to do all of those is basically zero. It's better to just replace the culture box with the navbox, since otherwise nothing will be done. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 10:36, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Dianemromero (10:51, 27 September 2025)

[edit]

Hello,

I am in the process of editing the 'Riverside South Manhattan' page with revisions about the history of the development of the project. My edits use three sources mainly from direct government city council links, an official New York city council city planning book, and a newspaper article from 1984.

This is my first time editing a wikipedia page and I had trouble with the citation code. I am under the impression that I should have hit preview instead of publish in order to view the code and that may have flagged my edits.

I would love to learn more about the process in order to submit well qualifying edits in the future. --Dianemromero (talk) 10:51, 27 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Dianemromero: welcome to Wikipedia! I can see your edits were reverted by @Khagendrawiki so maybe they can give their rationale. If you're using the visual editor (as I can see in the tags) then you don't need all that code - just click the "cite" button in the top toolbar. If you want to do it manually with the source editor just let me know and I can explain. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 10:41, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I also noticed my IP addressed was blocked and I think I had a VPN on in the background. When i disconnect it it looks like I can continue to edit the page. Should I proceed with my edit or will this get me blocked again? I would rather wait than lose access to the talk page. Dianemromero (talk) 04:11, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Dianemromero: if you have turned off your VPN you can continue with your edit. I can assure you that you won't be blocked. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 16:58, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello I want to create a page for myself. How do I start? --Kmcuno (talk) 22:00, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kmcuno: Firstly, I strongly advise you don't. Please read Wikipedia:Autobiography. If you decide to go ahead anyway, please remember that you must be notable for inclusion in Wikipedia (this rule is strictly enforced), and the article must be neutral in tone and backed by reliable source. If you have any further questions please let me know. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 16:00, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Matrix! Ii6t's Marco again, I was wondering how one can undo edits performed by other peoeple for example, if an edit is counter-factual, because I have seen others do it but I don't know how. --Marco Kotze Araujo (talk) 14:16, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I think Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#RfC: merging Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names with AN(I) should be no consensus, not consensus against. There were strong arguments on both sides and 8-5 isn't numerically overwhelming enough to say there's consensus against. voorts (talk/contributions) 17:52, 12 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Voorts: I changed it to rough consensus, still think the arguments were better on the oppose side. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 18:10, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The support argument was "too many noticeboards" and the oppose argument was "here's why this noticeboard is actually necessary". —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 18:10, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think those are fairly equally strong arguments; they're just talking past each other. voorts (talk/contributions) 18:33, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Voorts: I still don't think the arguments were equal in strength, but feel free to go to AN, I'll keep an eye —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 18:56, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to open a close review over it, just sharing my thoughts. voorts (talk/contributions) 19:07, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, always welcome to hear a second opinion :) —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 19:13, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"Reduce clutter" is by it's nature quite a weak argument. Proving something isn't clutter supersedes that argument. That's my chain of reasoning at least. —Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 19:12, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Hennedits (15:07, 17 October 2025)

[edit]

Hi Matrix, please refer to me as Henn. Would you please check my fluency and citation in the Airbus article? Also, how long would it take for me to become verified so I can edit semi-restricted articles? --Hennedits (talk) 15:07, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Henn: I checked the edit, the citation itself seems to be fine, just a few things:
  • Per WP:CITEFOOT we don't add a space between the citation and full stop
  • Be careful with primary sources - in this case they are allowed but not in every case.
You will be autoconfirmed in 4 days after 10 edits.
Matrix ping mewhen u reply (t? - c) 17:42, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So, Airbus website is a primary source, what would be an example of a secondary source?(I've already read the Wikipedia Help page on it.) Hennedits (talk) 18:35, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, there is an entry on Wikipeadia on my father Eddie O'Hara (Footballer) and I would like to put a short entry bio on myself, such as: Eddie O'Hara BEM is a British social worker based in Birmingham, England. He is the founding chair of the charity 'All Birmingham's Children (ABC) which advocates for children living in poverty and chiuld friendly policy. O'Hara was awarded the British Empire Medla (BEM) in the 2022 New Years Honours for services to children and families. Thank you Eddie --Eddie O'Hara (talk) 09:56, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
