Suggesting Article Improvements
[edit]![]() | Part of an edit requested by an editor with a conflict of interest has been implemented. |
I've added my COI tag to the talk page and would like to suggest some improvements that will bring this article up to date and improve its accuracy. I have other suggestions, but I'm starting with changes to the introduction and history section.
My edit suggestions for the introduction are:
| − | + | Commvault Systems, Inc. is an American publicly traded (CVLT:NASDAQ) Cyber resilience and data protection software company. Commvault enterprise software and SaaS-based services can be used for data backup and recovery, data security, AI-powered threat prediction and response, cloud and infrastructure management, retention, and compliance.
Commvault is headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey and has 29 offices globally, including those in Beijing, Shanghai, Mumbai, Dubai, Israel, France, Germany and Brazil. |
I would also like to request that the following paragraph be added to the end of the History section.
Thank you for your consideration and any feedback is welcome. SBCornelius (talk) 17:36, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
Not done: Listing number of clients is considered promotional. Axad12 (talk) 17:12, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- @ Axad12, thank you for the input. I have removed the number of customers stat from my request. I would also appreciate input on my other requested changes to the intro paragraph. The current language is somewhat dated and doesn't give an accurate summary. I've included several references here that show Commvault is currently understood as a cyber resilience company. I'll also change the COI tag back to n in case this isn't something you can prioritize at the moment. Thank you for your time.

- Hi @Encoded, and thanks for reviewing my suggestions. I have a few other edits to suggest, but I'd like to clarify this point before I move on. Are you saying that "cyber resilience" it a buzzword and that should be used to describe the company? Thanks again for your time and any feedback is appreciated. SBCornelius (talk) 19:54, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, I have no problem with cyber resilience specifically, the section I have issue with is "Commvault enterprise software and SaaS-based services can be used for data backup and recovery, data security, AI-powered threat prediction and response" sounding promotional - particularly the AI powered bit being in the lead. Commvault enterprise software and SaaS-based services are used for data backup, recovery and security[12][13], as well as cloud and infrastructure management, retention, and compliance.

I'm proposing an updated edit to the intro paragraph for this article and I would appreciate any feedback. I've also looked to articles for other SaaS companies for what the community finds acceptable, and most articles include a list of how the software is used in the intro to give readers a quick idea of the breadth of use. For examples please see Shopify, Snowflake_Inc., ServiceNow, and HubSpot.
My suggestion for new lead is:
Thank you to those reviewing this request.SBCornelius (talk) 21:54, 7 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hey @SBCornelius, thanks for the new suggestion. I've added a slighly adapted version of it to the article. My concern is no longer promotion but the overuse of product listing (e.g. listing everything it does with data). I believe that may violate WP:NOTPRICE. Therefore, I've kept the general premise of the lead but simplified it slightly. For example, by changing "data backup, recovery, and security" to "data security" since both the other topics are a part of data security. You can see the version I've added in the article. Hope this is satisfactory. Thanks, Encoded Talk 💬 15:17, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

Products - clean up list
[edit]It looks like the products list is outdated. Commvault seems to produce one thing, the Commvault Cloud. Previous items from the list like Metallic is now part of the Commvault cloud, as explained here: https://metallic.io/. Any concerns if I move all the items to a "Previous Products" section and put "Commvault Cloud" under Products? Fairwin99 (talk) 21:50, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi@Fairwin99! I'm a connected contributor with an edit request pending (see the above section on this Talk page). I have only requested changes to the intro paragraph, but I have suggested edits to other sections drafted and planned on posting them once the edits to the intro were settled.
- I have a new subsection that deals with the issue you've found regarding Metalic and Commvault Cloud. I thought I would drop it here to see if you found it helpful. This would be under the Software section and be titled Software as a Service.
- On October 14, 2019, Commvault launched Metallic, a SaaS backup and recovery service for the mid-market, allowing customers to backup on-premises data to their own backup system, their public cloud, Metallic's public cloud, or a combination of both.[1] In November 2023, Commvault announced the launch of Commvault Cloud,[2][3] a platform powered by Metallic that unifies the company's data protection and resilience capabilities.[4] The system integrates a number of security and AI partners, including Avira, CyberArk, Darktrace, Databricks, Entrust, Microsoft Sentinal, Netskope, Palo Alto Networks, and Trellix.[5] In August 2024, the company announced an expansion of its security partnerships to include, Google Cloud, Splunk, Dasera, Wiz and Acante.[6] Commvault Cloud utilizes a generative AI copilot to provide users with real-time insights, code assistance, and setup assistance.[7] In May 2024, the company launched Commvault Cleanroom Recovery, an on-demand service that allows organizations to create an isolated and secure environment for restoring backed-up data during a cyber attack.[8]
- Thanks and let me know your thoughts. SBCornelius (talk) 18:36, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
Not Done. The text above is obviously promotional in intent. Axad12 (talk) 12:58, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- cc @SBCornelius - I suggest removing the excessive words and stick to facts. Something like:
- Commvault provides a data protection and resilience software platform called Commvault Cloud, first introduced in November 2023 [link to source]. Commvault Cloud is used by mid-market companies for backing up data and restoring it on various locations.
- Under the products section list the product types not product names. Fairwin99 (talk) 03:15, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

Proposing a section on Software and Partnerships
[edit]![]() | This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. |
I would like to propose adding the following sections to define Commvault for readers better. This should go after the History section and before the Acquisitions section, but I'm open to feedback. Thanks for your time and please let me know if you have any questions.
- == History ==
(I'm proposing no changes to the 1st and 3rd paragraphs of the History section, but I propose adding the history content I previously had as a Software section.)

In 2015, following the release of Simpana version 10, the product line was renamed Commvault Software. In 2017, the company expanded into appliance-based data protection and announced ScaleProtect with Cisco Systems, combining its software with Cisco’s infrastructure.. The following year, Commvault repackaged its offerings under the name Commvault Complete. |
(Include the following new paragraphs after the current three paragraphs in the History section.)
In October 2019, Commvault introduced Metallic, a SaaS backup and recovery service for mid-market customers.[13] In November 2023, the company launched Commvault Cloud, a platform built on Metallic that unified its data protection and resilience offerings.[14][15] The platform incorporates security and AI integrations through technology partnerships, and in 2024 Commvault expanded these collaborations further.[16][17][18]Commvault Cloud also includes a generative AI copilot designed to provide real-time insights and assistance.[19]
In May 2024, Commvault introduced Cleanroom Recovery, a service that provides an isolated environment for restoring data in the event of a cyberattack.[20]
Software
[edit]Commvault software is a data protection platform that includes modules for backup, restore, archiving, replication, and search, and supports workloads across SaaS, hyperscale, and other environments.[21][22] Commvault Cloud is offered in three packages focused on operational recovery, cyber recovery, and autonomous recovery, and is available for both cloud and on-premises use.[23][24]
Partnerships
[edit]Commvault has established partnerships with major technology companies to supported joint offerings in areas such as backup, resiliency, and cloud integration.[10] [25] [26][27][28][29][30]
Notable initiatives include work with Cisco on appliance-based data protection in 2017, expanded services with IBM in 2018, and a co-engineered system with VAST Data in 2023 to enhance performance.[31][32][33][34] SBCornelius (talk) 17:37, 19 September 2025 (UTC)

- There's a lot to review here but I'll try to work my way thorough it. First though, a couple of suggestions. Put history in the history section - not the product or services sections. And source everything. If you want to rework the request, I'll wait. STEMinfo (talk) 00:22, 16 August 2025 (UTC)
- @STEMinfo, Thank you for taking a quick look at this. I've made some of the changes you suggested, so feel free to take a closer look when you're ready. I've removed a few paragraphs that were not well-sourced and moved dated statements into the History section. Thanks again for your time. SBCornelius (talk) 18:21, 22 August 2025 (UTC)

I'd change totechnology companies
for example, whilst it's not wrong it just makes it sound more factual and less promotional. I'm also concerned with citation overkill, having so many in a row. I'd recommend maybe expanding on one or two notable partnerships to give some spacing between them, or if you're happy for me to I can go through and just add a few notable ones rather than them all. - I'm happy to add it with the above tweaks if you'd be ok with that, but if you'd like to provide another version yourself happy to re-review also. Proposing sections on Services and Recognition
[edit]| This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
These proposed sections are the final additions I have to suggest for this article. Thank you for your time and feedback is always appreciated.
- Services
- Commvault provides consulting services for customers. The company advises customers with setting up new data management systems from the architecture design to the implementation and monitoring. In the remote managed service, Commvault manages the software in production for their customers.[1]
- Recognition
- In 2023, Gigaom's Sonar report named Commvault as the frontrunner in cloud-based data protection,[2] and in 2024 Gigaom gave Commvault the highest rating among data protection companies.[3]
- In June 2024, the company's Commvault Cloud for Government received the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program's designation as a High Authority to Operate.[4]
- Gartner named Commvault a leader in the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions for 2024.[5]

- Hi @Likeanechointheforest, thanks for catching that! I have updated the citation; please let me know what you think once you've had a chance to review it. SBCornelius (talk) 16:40, 14 October 2025 (UTC)

- Hi @Likeanechointheforest! Someone reverted these edits, so I wanted to reach out and get you opinion. I'm also tagging a few others who have worked on this article in the past in the hopes of building a consensus about these sections. I'd appreciate any feedback you all may have to offer. @Encoded @STEMinfo SBCornelius (talk) 18:46, 2 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hey @SBCornelius, I don't see a problem with the content, happy for it to be re-added. I'll hang on for any objections/agreements before doing anything. Thanks, Encoded Talk 💬 23:16, 3 December 2025 (UTC)

- Pinging Grayfell. After looking at the sourcing and awards, I have to say I'm leaning towards agreeing with Grayfell. Of the three proposed recognition items to be added, only the Gartner item can be sourced with something not resembling a marketing website. This seems OK. And Magic Quadrant discusses the award. Maybe the FedRAMP item could go in the history as a business item, rather than calling it recognition. STEMinfo (talk) 00:34, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
- I do not think the Magic Quadrant would be informative to disinterested readers, so it should not be included. The itbrief.com.au source is slightly better than naked PR, but it still appears to be churnalism. We would need a reliable (better) source to indicate to readers why this PR item is encyclopedically significant to the entire company. The FedRamp thing would also need context from a better source, but depending on that context I agree that it would probably make more sense in the history section. - I appreciate the time you're all putting into this. Please let me know if there is any specific legwork I can do for this. I'll take a second look at the sourcing for the Recognition section, but I believe I already used the best of what is available. I'll let you all know if I find something more acceptable and happily abide by the consensus either way. @Grayfell @Encoded @Likeanechointheforest @STEMinfo SBCornelius (talk) 17:24, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- I added FedRAMP to the history. This one seems OK for sourcing Gartner, also better in the history section since it would be the only item in a new Recognition section otherwise. For the discussion, almost 150 articles mention the magic quadrant, so I'll still suggest that it's the more noteworthy of the three proposed items. Waiting for any other comments related to consensus. STEMinfo (talk) 20:59, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- As I just said, the itbrief.com.au source appears to be churnalism. It appears to be derived entirely from a press release, and it is written in a vapid and promotional style. The author of that source adds no analysis, commentary, or additional context. The source provides no indication of any lasting significance. I do not accept that it is sufficient for this detail. Please use a better source to determine whether or not this is encyclopedically significant, and if such a source exists, use that source to decide how to explain this to readers without artificially inflating its importance. If the Magic Quadrant is being used for promotion at other articles, we will have to evaluate based on the sources at those articles. Grayfell (talk) 01:42, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
- Just looking over other mainspace articles which link to "Magic Quadrant"... I am not impressed and do not think this should be used to set any sort of precedent that over-rides the need to cite decent sources. Grayfell (talk) 02:04, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
- Fair enough - valid points. In a past life, I've worked with Gartner so I know how it is valued in the industry, despite the current sourcing not being there to back it up. Hopefully SBCornelius can find something with more meat. And hopefully I didn't send Greyfell down a rabbit hole of deletion. ;-) STEMinfo (talk) 05:37, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
