iOS 18 is a version of the iOS mobile operating system created by Apple. It was released on September 16, 2024. It was announced at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference 2024 on June 10, 2024.[1][2]

New features

[change | change source]

Home Screen

[change | change source]

The home screen can change to any color the user wants. The user can also change the size of the app icons or hide the app names. In this release, users can position apps wherever they want on the screen instead of just next to, or in between other app icons.[3]

Control Center

[change | change source]

The user can add, remove, resize, and organize the UI to their liking. Third-party apps' toggles can be added to the Control Center as well.[4][5]

The photo app was redesigned to be more user-friendly. The single view shows a grid of photos. Users can now browse their collection by themes without organizing the album.[6]

Messages

[change | change source]

Users can send messages with text effects. They can also schedule a later time for a message to be sent automatically. Due to the addition of Rich Communication Services (RCS) compatibility, users who do not use iMessage can now use special features that used to be unavailable. One example is read receipts, which allows the sender of a message to know when the person has received and opened it. Apple devices are now able to send messages through these chats over Cellular Data and Wi-Fi. [7] Apple has started messages via Satellite, allowing people to send messages without having Wi-Fi or Cellular Data.[8]

Users can sort their emails into groups such as primary, transactions, updates, and promotions.[9]

Password app

[change | change source]

The Password app provides an easy way for users to access their password, passkey, Wi-Fi password, and verification codes, as it is a replacement of the previous application Keychain.[10]

Apple Intelligence

[change | change source]

Apple Intelligence is an AI (Artificial Intelligence) that is built into the user experience of the Apple device. Currently, it is active in the United States, European Union countries, and China. It currently works on the iPhone 15 Pro Series, iPhone 16 Series and iPhone 16 Pro Series. Apple redesigned Siri to include suggestions, step-by-step instructions on how to do anything, and richer language understanding. Apple Intelligence features include AI-generated emojis, topic-based queries, and many other smart capabilities. This was supposed to publicly release in late 2024 when iOS 18.1 was released (except for Italy which has been postponed to 2026), however, Apple has delayed the features to an unknown date.[11]

Devices where it works

[change | change source]

iOS 18 is the last version of iOS that can be used on iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. It has been replaced for newer phones by iOS 26. However, Apple Intelligence only works on devices that have the Apple A17 Pro computing chip inside.[12]
