Savvas Learning Company is a U.S. based publisher of preK-12 educational textbooks, digital curriculum, assessments, and services.[1] The company is headquartered in Paramus, New Jersey.[2] The business was previously a subsidiary of Pearson Education, which in February 2019 sold its U.S. based K-12 curriculum division to Nexus Capital Management.[3][4] After becoming a newly independent company, it rebranded as Savvas Learning Company in May 2020.[1]

History

[edit]

Savvas Learning Company's roots trace back more than 125 years through educational publishers Scott Foresman and Prentice Hall, which eventually became part of Pearson Education.[5]

Scott Foresman, founded in Chicago in 1896, focused on elementary education and published the Dick and Jane reading primers.[6][7] It was acquired by Time Inc. in 1986, then by HarperCollins in 1989, and finally by Pearson PLC in 1996.[6][8]

Prentice Hall, established in 1913, published trade, technical, and educational books.[9][10] After several acquisitions, it came under Pearson in 1998.[11][12]

In 2019, Pearson sold its U.S. K-12 courseware business to Nexus Capital Management.[3][4] The business provided K-12 educators with curriculum in core academic subjects, as well as supplemental and intervention programs.[1] The newly independent company was initially called Pearson K12 Learning until May 2020, when it officially rebranded as Savvas Learning Company.[1][13] Since then, Savvas Learning Company has expanded its portfolio of digital learning solutions, online assessments, college and career readiness courses, and AI-related products.[14]

By 2023, the company had more than doubled its revenue to $1 billion.[2]

Leadership

[edit]

Savvas Learning Company is led by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President Bethlam Forsa.[15] Prior to being named CEO of the business upon its sale in 2019, Forsa served as the president of Pearson’s U.S. Learning Services business.[15]

Acquisitions

[edit]

In 2023, Savvas acquired Whooo's Reading and its AI-driven technology that assessed students’ writing and reading comprehension skills with its machine-learning algorithm.[16]

In 2024, Savvas acquired edtech startup Outlier.org, an online provider of dual enrollment and online college courses,[17] and Pointful Education, an online career and technical education (CTE) company.[18][19]
