Zed is a free and open-source text and source-code editor for Linux, macOS, and Windows developed by Zed Industries.
Supported features include GPU rendering, Language Server Protocol (LSP), Tree-sitter, a debugger with support for Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP),[2][3] AI assistance,[4] Model Context Protocol (MCP), Git, multi-buffer editing,[5] remote development[6] and real-time collaborative editing with other Zed users or AI agents.[7][8]
Extensions are available for additional LSP, DAP & MCP servers, themes and other features.[9]
Pricing
[edit]The Zed source code and functional program is free, but several features are limited in the free model (see - freemium pricing model).
As of 2025, the free version has monthly limits on the number of predictive edits and generative AI queries. [10]
History
[edit]After Atom was discontinued in 2022, three key contributors created Zed, announcing it in 2023. In 2024 the project was open-sourced.[11][12]
In 2025, the project announced they had received $32 million in funding from Sequoia Capital.[13]
