So you recommend one to change one's offensive user name but provide no information about how to do that.  Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.234.181.64 (talkcontribs) 18:41, 20 April 2005 (UTC)Reply

That can only be done by bureaucrats (and maybe admins). I'll add it to the page. I really think this should be at "Wikipedia:Username" rather than here. At the moment that redirects here. --Cromwellt|talk 21:14, 3 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Telling users if their name does not go with policy

[change source]

I've just came across a username who doesn't have Latin characters in it. Is their a template which I can tell him about it? - Æåm Fætsøn /ˈaɪæm ˈfætsən/ 07:39, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Change "do not" to "It is better not to"

[change source]

For the first three entries on "Offensive names policy", change "Do not" to "It is better not to". Using "Cupid" for a username (religious figure), "Panzer" (military term) or "ILikeIke" (political) isn't block-worthy. Alexis Jazz (talk) 06:55, 16 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

removal of outdated text

[change source]

i'd argue "IMPORTANT: Do not create the new user account, a bureaucrat will create it and move all your contributions (pages you have changed) and preferences (settings of your account)." should be removed as they no longer do as stated onWikipedia:Administrators

"Bureaucrats were previously able to help users who want to change their username. These requests were handled on Wikipedia:Changing username. However, the ability to rename users has been removed from bureaucrats for SUL finalization. Now, these requests should be made at Meta-Wiki or on this special page where stewards and global renamers will handle them."  Preceding unsigned comment added by Gamelootjes (talkcontribs)

Good catch, i made the change. Computer Fizz (talk) 16:26, 31 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Semi protected change request

{{editsemiprotected}} Wikipedia:Username#Multiple username policy:

"If you have a good reason that you do not want to edit under one username, that may be allowed. A user account that is used by another user but is not their main or first account is called a 'sockpuppet'."

Request to change to:

"If you have a good reason that you do not want to edit under one username, that may be allowed. A user account that is used by another user but is not their main or first account is called a 'sockpuppet', especially if it is used to disrupt the wiki."

The naming of any alternative account as a sockpuppet is incorrect, as sockpuppets are alternative accounts used to disrupt the wiki. 209.232.149.23 (talk) 20:23, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Not done per w:WP:SOCK. On Wikipedia, sockpuppetry, or socking, refers to the misuse of multiple Wikipedia accounts. Any alternative account can be called a sockpuppet. Also, mentioning disruption in a username policy where unnecessary is not a good idea and could encourage users to abuse multiple accounts. --Ferien (talk) 20:40, 23 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
