Wikipedia:PROD

From Wikipedia!

Proposed deletion (PROD) is a lightweight process to suggest deletion of an article that is unlikely to meet inclusion standards, without invoking full deletion discussions. On test.wikipedia, this page documents how to simulate the process for testing purposes.

What PROD is

[edit]
  • A simple, speedy track to propose deletion of an article.
  • No formal discussion is required unless the nomination is contested.
  • If contested, the article should be withdrawn from PROD and taken to a broader venue (e.g., Articles for deletion) depending on local policy.

When to use

[edit]
  • Use when the issue appears clear-cut and not controversial.
  • Avoid using for biographies of living persons, articles with substantial sourcing, or topics that may be contentious.
  • Do not use for files, templates, or categories unless local policy permits.

How to nominate

[edit]
  1. Add the PROD tag at the top of the article:
This template must be substituted. or This template must be substituted. (depending on templates available on testwiki).
  1. Provide a concise reason in the template parameter, e.g.:
 This template must be substituted.
  1. Notify the article creator or main contributors if possible.

During the PROD period

[edit]
  • The article remains visible for a short interval (often 7 days on many wikis; testwiki may differ).
  • Any editor can contest the PROD by removing the tag with a brief edit summary explaining why.
  • If the tag is removed, PROD ends immediately; consider moving to a community discussion venue.

Closing and deleting

[edit]
  • If uncontested after the waiting period, an administrator may delete the article per PROD.
  • Ensure the deletion log includes the reason provided in the tag.
  • If contested, do not delete via PROD; escalate appropriately if needed.

Common pitfalls

[edit]
  • Tagging controversial subjects—prefer a discussion process.
  • Omitting a clear reason—always state a concise, verifiable rationale.
  • Retagging after contest—once contested, do not re-PROD; use the discussion venue.
