Victoria local government population table formatting issue

[edit]

Articles in Category:Local government areas of Victoria (state) and Category:Local government areas in Melbourne contain the following wikitext, or similar:

{| class="wikitable sortable" style="text-align:center;"
|-
! colspan="3" style="text-align:center; font-weight:bold" | Population
|-
! style="text-align:center; background: font-weight:bold" | Locality !! style="text-align:center; background: font-weight:bold" | 2016 !! style="text-align:center; background: font-weight:bold" | 2021

The inline CSS is malformed and causes unreadable black text to appear in dark mode. Also, the bolding is redundant to the cells' designation as headers, and the cell text alignment styling is redundant to the overall table's styling.

Could someone please change it to:

{| class="wikitable sortable" style="text-align:center;"
|-
! colspan="3" | Population
|-
! Locality !! 2016 !! 2021

Thanks, This, that and the other (talk) 07:02, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be more than happy to knock this one out for you. Is this an exact text match, or do you need some regular expressions written? As an example, do I need to search for 2016 or should I be searching for \'\'\'\d{4}\'\'\' (4 consecutive digits flanked by )? Also, do you know if the whitespace is 100% identical in all instances, or does it change? Your sample code includes two spaces after background: and I wanted to make sure I'm not going to miss anything. Phuzion (talk) 13:29, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Massive change of sortkeys from East Timor to Timor-Leste

[edit]

Hello,

A number of articles and categories were renamed last year from East Timor to Timor-Leste, following this move discussion. However many articles and categories still have category sortkeys with the old name, ending up being sorted wrong.

The following needs to be performed (example):

  • In all articles and categories with a name containing Timor-Leste:
  • Look for:
    • Replace it by:
  • Also look for:
    • Replace it by:

I asked at Bot requests and was directed here. There are apparently 81 such pages. Place Clichy (talk) 01:32, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Doing... I'm relatively new to AWB but this looks like something I can do. ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email · global) 06:17, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I ended up with 23 changes. I'm not sure what I'm missing. My JWB settings for this job. ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email · global) 07:25, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@ClaudineChionh: there may be some in the category namespace. Categories tend to be placed in other categories, with the same sorting issues as regular articles. Place Clichy (talk) 13:03, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Facepalm Facepalm I wasn't searching in categories. Reran it now and got 45 more hits. ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email · global) 07:38, 19 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Currently at FLC, a reviewer made a better map for it so replace "Arab world" with "Arab States". Thanks, 🇪🇭🇵🇸🇸🇩 Easternsahara 🇪🇭🇵🇸🇸🇩 23:46, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Removing deprecated sources

[edit]

I'm wondering if someone already has a script to identify citations using a specified (deprecated) source, and replacing them with CN tags? The source in question is used on over 1.8k pages, so I'm rather hoping to automate the removal somewhat! Danners430 tweaks made 10:39, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done Per Wikipedia:Deprecated sources#Acceptable uses of deprecated sources: "Citations to deprecated sources should not be removed indiscriminately, and each case should be reviewed separately. While some deprecated sources have been completely eliminated as references, others have not." Using AWB to remove a reference 1,800 times would be indiscriminate. Phuzion (talk) 11:34, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's true - cheers for the clarification :-) Danners430 tweaks made 12:11, 22 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You can use Wikipedia:Kill-It-With-Fire. – DreamRimmer 12:29, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Kill-It-With-Fire says, "As with any semi-automated editing tool, you are solely responsible for any edits made using this tool. Misuse of this tool may lead to a block from editing." I don't use Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser or any other automated editing tool so would not be comfortable using Wikipedia:Kill-It-With-Fire and accidentally breaking things. Would someone familiar with automated editing tools help with restoring these links? Thank you. Cunard (talk) 05:49, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I've manually reverted the remaining five removal of links that were not the latest edits to the pages and didn't get reverted: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Cunard (talk) 09:42, 25 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Replace IPs with Temporary Accounts in Category:Welcome templates

Not done This is not a simple change that can be done en masse; this will require rewording of many templates. This would likely be a better discussion to have at WP:WC. Phuzion (talk) 23:22, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Tag categories for discussion

[edit]

Hello,

Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 October 29 § Roman Catholic church buildings requires placing discussion tags on many categories. I manually tagged hundreds of them but lost hope so I'm asking for help.

The following code needs to be added at the top of each category page (notice the variable <Target>):

<!-- BEGIN CFD TEMPLATE -->
<!-- Please do not remove or change this Template:Cfr message until the survey and discussion at WP:CFD is closed -->

<!-- End of Cfr message, feel free to edit beyond this point -->
<!-- END CFD TEMPLATE -->

The edit summary should be CFR, without marking it as minor.

Is there any volunteer able to do this? Place Clichy (talk) 12:21, 7 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Add category header template to a set of sub-categories

[edit]

Hi, as my older requests have been archived (first and second), I am reposting both requests here:

All sub-categories with title of the form "YYYY in Canada by province or territory" in
Just like the first request, I can prepare the CSV list of categories if needed.

Thanks. Jeeputer's Cat (talk) 17:29, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Just want to make sure I fully understand the requests before firing this off. For the first request, you want EVERYTHING removed, including all categories, the portal templates, etc. and replaced with JUST the following:

Commons category
And for the second request, you want the same thing, except using the other template? phuzion (talk) 21:12, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
