Which parameter should I use instead (of nationality)? MOS:INFONAT doesn't suggest any. If we remove "nationality" without any option, that seems quite unfair? Huldra (talk) 22:14, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Huldra: Well, not sure what you were trying to say in that comment, but doesn't MOS:INFONAT state, "A |citizenship= field can be used ..."? Thedarkknightli (talk) 04:07, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, as you can see in Mohamed Hadid, his citizenship= United States, Jordan. There is no field stating his ethnicity/nationality, and what he self-defines as, namely Palestinian, after you removed it. Please suggest a solution to that problem, thanks, Huldra (talk) 20:18, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How about changing the lead sentence to "... American real estate developer of Palestinian origin"? Thedarkknightli (talk) 21:04, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Why can't we have that in the info-box? Some would argue that is more important that what country gives you a passport, after all, Huldra (talk) 22:10, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, besides MOS:INFONAT, we have MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE, which states, "... an article should remain complete with its infobox ignored. The less information that an infobox contains, the more effectively it serves its purpose, allowing readers to identify key facts at a glance." Thedarkknightli (talk) 22:31, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And you just removed a major point about him from the info-box. I'm undoing. If you want to remove it, please start a RfC, Huldra (talk) 23:21, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, you made some edit to Hany Abu-Assad that are problematic because they protect unsourced anon edits not based in the sources cited & which conflict with his self-identification. I have opened a talk page section there to rectify this. Please participate to explain your edits if you seek to preserve them. Tiamut (talk) 06:39, 26 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Its just you & me on the talk page & no one is responding to the blp noticeboard request. If you had not objected, I would just be bold & change the infobox bc it is clearly out of line with several policies, including wp:blp. It currently implies Hany is an Israeli-Dutch filmmaker when that is not true & not what he is notable for. Can you please explain in the talk why you are okay with this misrepresentation? Based on what policies exactly? Or else withdraw your objection to the change. Thanks Tiamut (talk) 09:05, 28 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Original Barnstar
I was pleasantly surprised to see your edit at Salman Rushdie to enforce an RFC consensus even though that consensus did not match your personal preference (at least at that point in time). You have earned this barnstar for demonstrably upholding wiki-values and setting a good example for fellow editors. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 22:31, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wow thank you so much, @Abecedare! Cheers. Thedarkknightli (talk) 23:00, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Previous nationalities

[edit]

Hi Thedarkknightli. Regarding this and other similar edits, while you are right that these people became notable before the breakup of the Soviet Union, I don't think it makes much sense to refer to them this way, since it implies that the Soviet Union still exists and that they still hold Soviet nationality. This looks similar as referring to someone still living as Czechoslovak or East German etc. MOS:NATIONALITY says In most modern-day cases, this will be the country, region, or territory where the person is currently a national or permanent resident. I think in such cases, we are probably fine using only the current nationality if they are still living. Thanks. Mellk (talk) 07:33, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Mellk, thanks for reminding me about that. Now I agree it doesn't make much sense to refer to any of them as "a Soviet and ...". They're still alive. I find it necessary to summarize their Soviet-era careers later in the leads (which we haven't done in Nikita Mikhalkov yet), though.
Regards, Thedarkknightli (talk) 15:36, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree that their careers in the Soviet Union should be mentioned in the lead if it is applicable. That way it is clear that they became notable before the breakup of the USSR. For Nikita Mikhalkov as an example, it could be mentioned that his acting career began during the Soviet period or he starred in Soviet films (something along those lines). Thanks. Neeson

[edit]

hello just want to know as to why should he be considered as an actor from Northern ireland and not a northern Irish actor? Rayan241 (talk) 12:51, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Rayan241: because a consensus has been reached through this discussion. Thedarkknightli (talk) 00:55, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Thedarkknightli I just seen you reverted my edit for Liam Neeson on this. That discussion you linked from 2018 absolutely does not include consensus for your edit. The source I provided is a clear source about his nationality. IrishReader1996 (talk) 22:36, 18 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox person

[edit]

I saw this discussion you referenced and I think it makes sense to include the republic (the infobox documentation does not discourage including subdivisions; it mentions this standard format: city, administrative region, country).

This discussion seems to be focused more on the USSR and Yugoslavia etc., but I did see you also mentioned the Russian Empire. I am not sure about this, though, at least for places that were always part of Russia (say Moscow and St. Petersburg).

For example, I do not think we would generally need to write "French Fourth Republic" or "Kingdom of France" etc. (maybe there will be some exceptions but that will depend on discussion). Algeria was considered to be part of Metropolitan France, at least administratively, but of course we would be fine if we just wrote "France" for places that are still part of France. Thoughts? Mellk (talk) 11:34, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Mellk, thanks for noting that! I personally find disambiguation necessary in Russian Empire's case. The empire was much bigger than present-day Russia. I mean, it included a lot of present-day countries. Thedarkknightli (talk) 12:48, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would make sense to write "Russian Empire" for places not located within present-day Russia, but I am not sure if it is necessary for places like Moscow. Mellk (talk) 12:50, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, it isn't unless for consistency within an infobox. Thedarkknightli (talk) 13:31, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of Arbitration Enforcement noticeboard discussion

[edit]

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a report involving you at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement regarding a possible violation of an Arbitration Committee decision. The thread is Thedarkknightli. Thank you. —Absolutiva 01:50, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that "Swedish citizenship from 1905" (repeating the birth year) was not proper format; I have reworded the infobox accordingly. However, you are quite wrong about the rules of Swedish citizenship. While some countries do indeed forbid dual citizenship, Sweden is not one of them. Garbo never renounced her Swedish citizenship, and that citizenship did not cease when she became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1951. It is erroneous to state, or even infer, that it ceased when it didn't. Mason.Jones (talk) 20:04, 18 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Well @Mason.Jones, do you have a source for that? Per the article Swedish nationality law, it was impossible for Swedish citizens to hold dual citizenship before 2001 unless they automatically acquired the other citizenship at birth. Also, I changed the descriptor to "Swedish and American" in this edit not because Garbo held dual citizenship, but because she had a career that spanned her emigration (see MOS:NATIONALITY). Thedarkknightli (talk) 01:41, 19 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've googled many sources about this. If they mention Garbo's citizenship at all, they confirm that she did have to relinquish her Swedish citizenship in 1951. Although it was restored with Sweden's new 2001 law (which was retroactive), that certainly doesn't cover all the decades when she was not a Swedish citizen. Your edit seems to be the most logical resolution. Mason.Jones (talk) 15:52, 19 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
