Donald Stimson Bethune (born 1948) - I am an American physicist, inventor, and former IBM Research Staff Member. After receiving a B.S. in physics from Stanford University in 1970, I went on to obtain a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California Berkeley under the guidance of Prof. Yuen-Ron Shen. I joined IBM Research Division in 1977 and began work with Dr. Peter P. Sorokin at the IBM Thomas J Watson Research Laboratory in Yorktown Heights, NY before moving in 1983 to the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California. I worked on a wide variety of topics before retiring from IBM Research in December 2022 after a 45-year career. I am most known for my work on fullerenes and most notably for the independent co-discovery of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and a catalytic method for their production. I've done experimental work in the fields of nonlinear optics, surface chemistry, fullerenes and endohedral fullerenes, quantum cryptography, Li-Air battery chemistry, high capacity optical storage systems, and quantum computing (among others!).
