For the field is full of shades as I near the shadowy coast,

And a ghostly batsman plays to the bowling of a ghost,

And I look through my tears on a soundless-clapping host

As the run-stealers flicker to and fro,
To and fro

Hello, I'm Jack. I'm English, and mostly interested in 🏏 cricket. You've probably guessed that after seeing the lines above, which are from a poem called At Lord's by Francis Thompson (1859–1907).

I'm also interested in ⚽️ football, 📫 postage stamps, historical subjects, and old movies (especially westerns and British war films).

I have a second account called BeachBoyJack (BBJ). That's for when I'm on a shared server and the vibrations begin. BBJ was created in unusual circumstances which are explained in the TBOX at the top of my talk page.

Glad to be here—please give me a shout if you think I might be able to help you.

Cricket: work in progress

[change | change source]

Priority

[change | change source]

This had to be rebuilt from scratch because it lacked any coherent structure, and did not provide navigation. Now satisfactory, as things stand, but some of the subcategories must be considered flexible, pending expansion of coverage. The articles in this root category are the key subjects only, and that excludes all teams and individuals. These articles are fundamentals—like Cricket itself—and then the primary skills, objectives, and necessaries.

Cricket
Several mini-sections inserted as placeholders to help define structure. All except the development/history piece have been expanded, but they are all first drafts and need much more work. Will also have to decide which sources to cite.
Glossary of terms used in cricket
A, B & C done. Pitch, creases and wickets probably okay now. Move on to D, E & F.
Batting
Largely rewritten, but needs more. Review first before restarting.
Bowling
Ditto.
Comparison of baseball and cricket
Common history section needs cricket sources to complement David Block. Altham and Major?
Dismissal
Rewritten, but still a first draft only. Much more work to be done. References needed too.
Fielding
Rewritten. More needed, plus references.
Innings
Nearly there, but does need more sources.
International Cricket Council
Scrapped and rewritten. Key info now in place, but could use more in due course.
The Laws of Cricket
A case of "so far, so good", but it is only a historical summary.
Pitch
Content-wise, this is not far off, but it needs citations which will mostly be from the Laws. Check Glossary.
Scoring
Scrapped. Rewrite has commenced but much more info needed as it stands.
Umpire
Started with references. Need to link DRS to its eventual home.
Wicket-keeper
Started with references. Much more needed.
First-class cricket
Rescued. The salient points are there now, but it will need further expansion.
Single wicket cricket
Rescued and rewritten, but it needs a thorough review. Find better references.

All stadium articles need attention, these most of all:

Narendra Modi Stadium
Needs expansion. Quite well referenced.

National Stadium, Karachi
Bare stub. Must be expanded. One reference only.
Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium

Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium
Not bad as a start. To be improved and expanded. Referenced.
The Gabba
Needs to be improved and expanded with a focus on cricket.

Little development as yet. Should eventually become subcategories only.

History of cricket
Rescued. Rewriting from scratch. Origins and 17th century in progress.

Papua New Guinea women's cricket team

Subcategories only. Functional use. There have been far too many lists. (1 C)

This has three old subcats holding a total of 42 "lists" which can best be described as indiscriminate redlink directories.

Template:International cricketers
Using this as the guideline for restructuring the indiscriminate lists of players which are masses of redlinks and useless statistics. List of Zimbabwe men's international cricketers is complete as the model. Three others have been started (see below). Separate Test, ODI, and T20I lists are being merged, and then split into two parts—former and active players, with application of w:WP:LSC. To minimise maintenance, active players state debut years only and do not include matches played. It helps that England and Pakistan have Test cricket lists only.
List of Australia women's international cricketers
Work in progress. Template built, but only two players as yet. Referenced.
List of India women's international cricketers
Created using Aussie template. Two players in place. Referenced.
List of Sri Lanka men's international cricketers
Work in progress. Template built, but only two players as yet. Referenced.
List of Zimbabwe men's international cricketers
complete, as above.
Cricket: A Weekly Record of the Game
Started. Needs more content. Referenced.
Wisden Cricketers' Almanack
Short stub. One reference only.

Biographies

[change | change source]

The problem is microstubs. After removal of about 200 non-notables, the total of players' articles has been reduced to a more manageable 556, of which some 100-plus have been improved to an okay sort of quality, but another 400-plus have been tagged for cleanup, corrections, copyediting, update, etc.

Category:International cricketers (men) and Category:International cricketers (women) are new sub-categories, currently being populated. Nationalities A to D are completeEnglish/Welsh ongoing (AI complete).

In the list below are bios I intend to create and/or improvework has begun on Pelham Warner:
