Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Remake is an upcoming remake of the original 2002 stealth action-adventure video game, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, developed by Ubisoft Toronto and published by Ubisoft.[1] It is being built “from the ground up” and aims to preserve the core spirit of the original while employing modern technology and design sensibilities.[2][3]

The remake is being developed by Ubisoft Toronto, known for past work on titles like Far Cry 6 and the original Splinter Cell: Blacklist. The project itself is being built using the Snowdrop engine, which Ubisoft uses for other next-generation titles, enabling advanced lighting, shadow, and environmental fidelity.[4]

Development and release

[edit]

On 15 December 2021, Ubisoft formally announced that a remake of the original Splinter Cell was green-lit, led by Ubisoft Toronto.[5][6] The announcement noted the use of Ubisoft’s in-house Snowdrop engine and emphasized that the remake would be built from scratch rather than simply remastered. The original Splinter Cell, released in 2002, was one of Ubisoft’s flagship action-adventure stealth titles and introduced the character Sam Fisher and the “light and shadow” mechanics for which the series became known. Over the years, the franchise had multiple sequels and spin-offs, but no mainline entry for several years prior to the remake announcement. The concept arts was posted by Ubisoft as a celebration of 20th anniversary of Splinter Cell franchise.[7] The director, David Grivel, has officially left the remastered game during development issues.[8]

The remake marks the return of one of Ubisoft’s legacy stealth franchises after a long hiatus from a mainline release. It is expected to set the stage for future entries in the Splinter Cell series. The emphasis on fidelity to the original, combined with modern production values, places it among a wave of remakes seeking to revive classic titles for new hardware and audiences.[9]

According to producer Matt West and creative director Chris Auty, the remaster will keep the game’s linear mission-based structure rather than shift to an open-world format, and strive to preserve the “feel” of the early games (e.g., using darkness, gadgets, infiltration), and the idea of being a ghost in the shadows. The team has said that while the core will be faithful, some design elements will be updated to meet modern player expectations (controls, UI, comfort options).[10] Public communication emphasizes that the game is still in the “very earliest stages” of development, and while no official release date has been announced. However, some industry sources and job listing leaks that suggest a release expectation could be around 2026.[11][12]
