Halberstam?

[edit]

I think the paragraph on David Halberstam should be deleted. Halberstam used the word "Quagmire" in the title of his book, but nothing the paragraph says about the book or about Halberstam has anything to do with the quagmire theory. That was a theory about the way American policy toward the Vietnam War was formulated, mostly in Washington. The book deals the events on the ground in Vietnam.

Anyone who believes the book contains a statement of the theory should cite a reliable source, or cite a particular page number in the book. Ed Moise (talk) 22:40, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Vietnam and U.S. History

[edit]

The section "Vietnam and U.S. History," making up about half of this article, does not say anything about the Quagmire Theory and also is in many places inaccurate.

It would be possible to say something about the Tonkin Gulf incidents of August 1964 that would be quite relevant to the Quagmire Theory. The current paragraph does not do that. It simply summarizes the event, in a very misleading fashion, giving an impression that the Tonkin Gulf Resolution was primarily provoked by the fight between the Maddox and three North Vietnamese torpedo boats on August 2, 1964.

If I am going to do something about this section I will probably start by deleting the paragraph on Halberstam and the media, which is both irrelevant to the Quagmire Theory and inadequately sourced. If somebody puts in the source citations I have requested my case for deleting it will become much weaker. Ed Moise (talk) 06:16, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
