Correct Album Release Month: January or February?

[edit]

The article currently states that Giant Steps was released in February 1960. The two references do indeed indicate a February 1960 release.

However, page 18 of the liner notes of the 1998 Rhino Records reissue of Giant Steps (Rhino Records R2 75203) states:

Original Album Released As Atlantic SD-1311, January 1960.

Also, page 2 of the January 25, 1960 edition of Billboard says in the section titled "New Atlantic Pkgs. Out This Week":

Atlantic Records is releasing two new LP's this week ... and "Giant Steps," a jazz package featuring tenor sax star John Coltrane, who is under exclusive contract to the firm.

January 25, 1960 was a Monday with the following Sunday being January 31. The next issue of Billboard is dated February 1, 1960. As such, "this week" in the Billboard text almost certainly means the week of January 25-January 31, 1960.

Billboard is stating this in advance of the release. It is possible the release slipped a week or two, though this would be more likely if the release were announced many weeks in advance. It seems less likely, though certainly possible, when announcing a release the very same week.

I could not find any other release announcements or similar in Billboard for Giant Steps.

The details I have added here contradict the details in the article but are not conclusive so I will not make any changes to the article at this time. I am hoping others can add further details to this discussion to help clarify this (and will keep my eyes open for the same).

Try this: Billboard January 25, 1960
(Giant Steps is a hugely important album but a reply in less than 20 minutes? Wow.)
