"The posts of Constable and Governor have been joined since 1660."

[edit]

The implication is that the posts of Constable and Governor were separate before 1660. The list currently shows one one person at a time all the way back to 1086, and does not specify whether each was Constable or Governor or both. Were there men who held one post but not the other? Were there times when one man was Constable while another was Governor? Perhaps the posts were separate only in theory, or very briefly, or very occasionally? jnestorius(talk) 16:58, 22 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have edited and answered my own question. The list was of "Constable" to 1668 and "Constable-and-Governor" thereafter, so I have renamed the section and noted this relevant fact. Perhaps some pre-1668 Constables were also Governors (either simultaneously or earlier in their career) but I have not attmpted to add such information. For now at least it is a clear and complete list——
——except that the (previously uncited) source appears (from my cursory look) to be the 1923 VCH, which has errors identified by a 1967 source. I've added VCH as the current source, tagged it as {{Obsolete source}}, and mentioned the 1967 source. I have no time to update the article with the 1967 source. I invite anyone else to do so (and other corrections if you can find any). jnestorius(talk) 18:02, 22 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
