Prunella Scales (born Prunella Margaret Rumney Illingworth; 22 June 1932 – 27 October 2025) was an English actress. She was best known for her role as Basil Fawlty's wife Sybil in the BBC comedy Fawlty Towers and her BAFTA award-nominated role as Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution (Screen One, BBC 1991) by Alan Bennett. She also appeared in a series of adverts for the supermarket chain Tesco, playing an eccentric and demanding customer named Dotty between 1995 and 2004.
In March 2014, her husband Timothy West revealed to The Guardian that Scales was living with Alzheimer's disease.[2] She died on 27 October 2025 at her home in London at the age of 93.[3]
