Plug-in electric vehicles in Italy
As of October 2022[update], there were around 158,000 electric vehicles in Italy.[1] In 2024, 4.2% of new cars registered in Italy were fully electric and 3.3% were plug-in hybrid.[2]
As of August 2022[update], the Fiat New 500 was the best-selling electric car in Italy.[3]. In 2024 Tesla held the top two spots with Models 3 and Y, followed by Volvo EX30, Dacia Spring and Jeep Avenger.[2]
Government policy
[edit]As of October 2022[update], the Italian government offers subsidies of €7,500 for purchases of battery electric vehicles, and €6,000 for plug-in hybrid vehicles.[4] In August 2025 a new, means-tested scheme was launched offering up to €11k subsidy.[5]
Charging stations
[edit]At the end of 2021 there were 10,503 public charging stations in Italy.[6] As of May 2024[update] the number of public charging station grew to 41,114, equivalent to one per 1,429 inhabitants. This is low compared to other European countries such as Belgium (1 station per 266 inhabitants) or the Netherlands (1 station for 123 inhabitants).[7]
Public opinion
[edit]The reception of EVs in Italy has been tepid, because of the relative high cost of electricity (compared to other European countries) which is on average 0,30 €/kWh, the high prices of EVs, the lack of financial incentives from the government, and the scarcity of charging stations, which make EVs not affordable to the middle-class costumer. Further, many Italian houses are equipped with electric contracts allowing only 3 kW of peak consumption, making home charging of electric cars impractical.
In an October 2022 poll conducted by Areté, 63% of respondents who have tried an electric car said that they wanted to buy one in the future; this is a decline from 87% in March 2022.[8]
By region
[edit]Lombardy
[edit]Starting in 2024, all car sharing services in Milan will be prohibited from using gasoline-powered vehicles.[9]
