Playing the Angel
Playing the Angel is the eleventh studio album by English band Depeche Mode. The album was released on October 17, 2005, on Mute Records in the UK and Sire/Reprise in America. It was preceded by the single "Precious", released on October 3, 2005. Playing the Angel was the first Depeche Mode album since Exciter, which came out in 2001. Playing the Angel was a notable album for Depeche Mode because it was the first record where singer and front man Dave Gahan contributed songs to the album, including the single "Suffer Well", which was nominated for 2007's Grammy Best Dance Recording but lost.
Playing the Angel was a commercial and critical success, selling approximately 3 million copies worldwide and receiving an aggregate score of 78/100 by Metacritic. Following the album's release, the band embarked on Touring the Angel, which consisted of 124 dates worldwide and lasted from October 28, 2005 through August 1, 2006.
