OpenTTD is an open source business simulation game, based upon the popular Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", written by Chris Sawyer.[5] which players try to earn money by transporting passengers, minerals and goods via road, rail, water and air.

Starting from 1st April 2021, it is available on Steam, a video game store and digital distribution platform.[6][7]

Many features were inspired by TTDPatch while others are original.[5]

The first Transport Tycoon game was released in 1994. It was developed by Chris Sawyer and released by MicroProse. It was very popular at that time. After the release of Transport Tycoon Deluxe (TTD) in 1995, the game was greatly improved.

TTDPatch

[change | change source]

Around 1996 to 1997, Josef Drexler started a project called TTDPatch. It was able to support NewGRF (package) files, two company colours, and trams. It fixes some problems with the game and also adds a lot of new features to it. The TTDPatch project has lasted for many years and has changed the game obviously.

Creation of OpenTTD

[change | change source]

TTDPatch's way of changing the game, making people hard to add new features to the game. In 2003, Ludde contacted Owen Rudge, owner of TT-Forums, and explained he was going to reverse engineer the game and switch the game to C (programming language). A year later, Ludde presented Owen Rudge with the result. Response was positive, and other developers joined Ludde in the project.[9]
