Nane Sarma

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Naneh Sarma is a figure (or character) from old stories in Iran. She is a woman. Like Baba Nowruz and Haji Firuz, her story goes back to the time of Zoroaster. She is a sign of winter.[1]

The story of Baba Nowruz and Naneh Sarma is about the old year ending and the new year starting. An old man named Baba Nowruz (also called Uncle Nowruz) comes to see an old woman named Naneh Sarma, who is like his wife. People say that only one night each year, Naneh Sarma can see Baba Nowruz. After that night, she leaves, and they do not see each other again until the same night next year. The months of the year are like their children, and when each child starts to rule, the weather changes.[2]

In another story, on the first day of spring each year, Naneh Sarma waits for Uncle Nowruz. But before he comes, she gets tired and falls asleep. When she wakes up, she sees that Uncle Nowruz has already come and is gone.
