I propose this change to mitigate risks of editors accidentally editing while logged out upon the roll-out of temporary accounts, by better explaining the possible privacy risks of a temporary account as opposed to a full account. This was workshopped slightly in this discussion and I don't see it as being controversial to clarify this risk, especially given that editing while logged out carries significant privacy concerns regarding access to one's IP, and the current message does not sufficiently convey that risk, choosing instead to link to a documentation page which many will likely not click on. Please change the wording to the following:
This makes it consistent with MediaWiki:Anoneditwarning (which is currently not being used due to the temporary accounts).
Likewise, for MediaWiki:Autocreate-preview-warning, change to the following to make it consistent with MediaWiki:Anonpreviewwarning:
It also is more specific (that administrators and similar can view the IP addresses behind temporary accounts). Aasim (話す) 23:50, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Awesome Aasim: I would suggest removing the second comma of the suggested wording for this message. I also think that the wording of the latter one should be replaced with "You are not logged in. If you submit this edit, a temporary account will be created for you. Administrators and other trusted users will be able to view your IP address to prevent abuse." –Gluonz talk contribs 21:36, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- That isn't bad for the edit-warning message I presume. Aasim (話す) 23:20, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
Done with minor changes. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:57, 14 November 2025 (UTC)

- No. I've done so now. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:50, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Pppery: Thanks. You also seem to have removed the center-alignment of the other template. I was not trying to suggest that the entire template be replaced with exactly what was in my comment, so feel free to restore its formatting tags if you have no independent reason for their removal. –Gluonz talk contribs 19:02, 16 November 2025 (UTC)
- I don't really care, but sure, restored. Wow, I'm really not on my A game this week. * Pppery * it has begun... 19:23, 16 November 2025 (UTC)

Alternative wording suggestion
[edit]I can't say I like the current text. It is overly technical, with details that are not of interest for somebody who makes their first edit (they won't even know what a checkuser is, and really don't have to). Also, speaking about abuse can only drive potential editors away; we should instead WP:AGF and be positive. Furthermore, it is also misleading (see above). How about something like this:
"You are not logged in. Once you make an edit, a temporary account will be assigned automatically, which expires after at most 90 days. If you [$1 log in] or [$2 create an account], your edits will instead be attributed to a username, and you will be able to receive notifications about your edits for as long as you wish, among other benefits."
