Grokipedia is a free online encyclopedia reportedly made by the AI model Grok. Elon Musk’s company, xAI, made Grokipedia. Musk said he made it because he thinks Wikipedia has a left-wing bias, and he thinks Grok would not have this bias.[1][2][3]
Background
Elon Musk has often said that he wants to make another website that could be better than Wikipedia.[4] He says that many sources that Wikipedia calls "reliable" are biased and that it does not treat conservative news sources fairly.[5] In 2023, he offered to give one billion dollars to Wikipedia if it was renamed "Dickipedia,"[6][7] and Wikipedia said no. In October 2024, Musk said that Wikipedia was "controlled by far-left activists" and told people not to give money to it.[8][9] In September 2025, he said that his company xAI was making a new encyclopedia powered by AI.[10][11] Musk said this after White House AI and crypto money expert, David Oliver Sacks, who has been a critic of Wikipedia, posted online.[12][13]
Grokipedia officially started on October 27, 2025.[14] As of October 2025, Grokipedia has about 885,000 articles and counting.[15] Some people have said that many of its pages are "adapted" from Wikipedia.[16][17] Unlike Wikipedia, people cannot change articles.[18]
Reception
The cofounder of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger, responded to the launch saying, "The jury's still out as to whether it's actually better than Wikipedia. But at this point I would have to say 'maybe!'"[19] He said that the article on himself on Grokipedia provides correct and interesting information not found in the corresponding Wikipedia article, though he also saw that Grok sometimes said things that were not true or real.[20] He noted to keep pressure both on Wikipedia and Grokipedia.[21][non-primary source needed] Wikipedia co-founder Jimbo Wales said he his not sure whether large language model AI are good for writing encyclopedas.[22] When asked about "woke" bias, Wales said, "We shouldn't be 'wokepedia.' That's not who we should be or what people want from us. It would undermine trust."[22] He thinks that people think Wikipedia is better than it really is.[22] Then he saied "there is still so much work to do."[23]
