Gordon was an African-American runaway slave from Mississippi or Louisiana. He gained notoriety during the American Civil War, when he ran away from slavery from a plantation in March 1863 and joined one of the so called "colored regiments" of the Union Army. In 2022, Apple TV+ made the film "Emancipation" based on the story of his escape, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Will Smith.
