Gerald Baumgartner (* 14 November 1964 in Oberndorf near Salzburg) is a former Austrian football player and current football coach.
Career
[change | change source]Gerald Baumgartner began playing football at 1. Oberndorfer SK . 1983 he moved to Salzburg, to join SV Austria Salzburg. He made his Bundesliga debut for Salzburg in the 1985/86 season, followed by five more appearances and one goal. For the next two seasons, he had to play in the second division with Austria Salzburg. In 1987 he moved to Austria Vienna. He only made sporadic appearances over two seasons. Then he returned to Austria Salzburg in 1989 for a year and a half. In the spring of 1991, he played for First Vienna FC and the following season for Vorwärts Steyr. From 1992 to 1995, he played for SV Ried before returning to his original club in Oberndorf, where he remained a player until 2004. He also had a brief stint with Union Vöcklamarkt in the 1998/99 season.
Manager
[change | change source]His first coaching position was with the U-17 team of SV Austria Salzburg. After the Red Bull takeover, he was appointed assistant coach of the reserve team. In 2006, following the dismissal of Franz Aigner, he took over as head coach of the Juniors for three matches. Then he returned to his assistant role behind Thorsten Fink. On 8 April 2011, he assumed the head coach position after Niko Kovač was appointed assistant coach of the first team. He immediately led the Juniors to the Regionalliga West championship and the Salzburg Football Cup. After the autumn season of 2011, he left the Juniors along with assistant coach Martin Hiden. He became coach of Red Bull Salzburg's new partner club, FC Pasching. He had great success with Pasching (Austrian Cup in 2012/13) . This was first cup victory for a third-division team in the history of Austrian football.
In early September 2013, Baumgartner was confirmed as the new coach of the Austrian second division club SKN St. Pölten. On 27 May 2014, Baumgartner became the new coach of the Austrian Bundesliga club Austria Wien. His first match was a 6–0 victory against First Vienna FC 1894 in the first round of the Austrian Cup . His first league victory was against Ried Baumgartner was dismissed on 22 March 2015. In December 2015, he became coach and sporting director of SV Austria Salzburg. On 3 January 2017, he became coach of the Bundesliga club SV Mattersburg. In August 2018, Mattersburg parted ways with Baumgartner. Mattersburg had earned three points in the first four games of the 2018/19 season and were second to last in the table.
On 1 January 2019 Baumgartner took over as head coach and sporting director of second-division club SV Ried. With Ried, he achieved promotion to the Bundesliga .In December 2020, Baumgartner was dismissed. In April 2021, he became coach for a second time with SKN St. Pölten, who had also just been promoted to the first division.With SKN, he was relegated to the second division after finishing bottom of the table and losing the relegation play-offs. Baumgartner's contract then ended, and he was replaced by Stephan Helm. Now he is sporting director with ASKÖ Oedt.
