Comment: It doesn’t matter how many times you tell the LLM to rewrite this, it’ll never produce a good article. Trust me. —pythoncoder (talk | contribs) 12:01, 21 October 2025 (UTC)

Simply Onno GmbH is a Berlin-based health tech startup founded in 2024. The company creates digital applications that rewrite medical documents into plain language, so patients can understand them more easily. The startup states, that the software was developed in collaboration with practising physicians and its outputs are reviewed at regular intervals by medical specialists.[1]
Background
[edit]Patients often report difficulty in interpreting medical documents. In Germany, a survey conducted by Bielefeld University reported that roughly half of adults have limited health literacy, struggling with written medical information.[2] A systematic review showed an association between limited health literacy and poorer health results, as well as increased healthcare service use.[3][4]
Various digital tools have been tested to address these comprehension gaps. A 2023 meta-analysis reported that digital health education tools are able to enhance the medical knowledge and self-efficacy of users.[5] Recent research indicates that AI language models can modify medical text complexity to match different reading levels.[6]
History
[edit]Simply Onno was founded in 2024 by Karen Hentschel, Marc Dantas Tiedemann, Stephan Thiel, and Witold Polanski.[7] The idea arose from routine hospital work, where patients frequently asked for help understanding their reports; this background was later described by the Sächsische Zeitung.[8]
Concept
[edit]Users can upload medical documents to an online platform, which then rewrites the content in layman's language. According to the company and several organisations that reported on the project, physicians contributed to the development process and continue to provide feedback on the accuracy of the translations.[1][9][10]
Research
[edit]In 2025, the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden initiated two prospective, randomised studies that include the use of Simply Onno in clinical communication.[11] Both trials are listed in the German Clinical Trials Register and investigate whether AI-assisted translation of medical documents and discharge letters into layman's language improves patient comprehension and satisfaction compared to standard documents. The studies also analyze, whether such interventions have influence on the consultation time.[12][13]
Reception
[edit]Some German news outlets and non-profit groups have written about the project. Sächsische Zeitung focused on the clinical background of the idea,[8] the German Stroke Foundation presented it as a way to make complex documents clearer for patients,[10] and the Social Association VdK reported early user feedback from regional tests.[9][14]
In Monitor Versorgungsforschung, the service was placed in a wider context of digital health communication.[15] Regional outlets such as NWZ Online and PM-Report also covered the topic from a patient-education angle. [16][17] The company was also listed in the EU-Startups directory and mentioned by the Landesverband Senioren NRW.[18][19] The VdK Nord later produced a short explainer video about the service.[20]
Awards
[edit]In 2025, WELT awarded Simply Onno with the German KI Startup Award ("Best AI Startup").[21]

- Essay-like writing
- Hallucinations (plausible-sounding, but false information) and non-existent references
- Close paraphrasing
Please address these issues. The best way is usually to read reliable sources and summarize them, instead of using a large language model. See our help page on large language models.
