PDFgear is a freeware proprietary PDF management application that can view, edit, fill, sign, and convert PDF files.[1] It is developed by PDF Gear Tech Pte. Ltd. and was first released in 2022. PDFgear supports multiple platforms, including Microsoft Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Android. PDFgear provides tools for viewing, editing, converting, and signing PDF documents.[2]

PDFgear is mainly known for being totally free, and has been described as an alternative to paid software such as Adobe Acrobat.[3] However, PDFgear does not fully replace Adobe Acrobat for advanced or enterprise-level use since it lacks several advanced features, such as Professional-grade editing and collaboration features.[4]

Features

[edit]

PDFgear provides a full toolkit for editing and managing PDF files.

  • PDF Editing: Allows editing of texts in PDFs, and adding new texts to PDFs.[5][6][7]
  • PDF Conversion: Supports converting PDFs to other file formats, and converting other formats into PDFs.[8][9]
  • Annotation: Allows adding highlights, underlines, shapes, stamps, notes, and URL links to documents.[10][11]
  • Merge & Split: Allows merging multiple PDFs into a single PDF, or splitting one PDF into several PDFs.[12][13][14]
  • Page Organization: Supports managing pages in the PDF, including adding, deleting, rotating, and extracting pages within a PDF.[15][16][17]
  • Form Filling: Supports filling out forms in PDF, including non-interactive and interactive forms.[18][19]
  • E-signature: Allows signing PDFs by typing, drawing, or selecting a local image of a signature.[20][21][22]
  • OCR (Optical Character Recognition): Supports recognizing and extracting texts from PDFs or screenshots.[23]
  • Password Protection: Allows setting a password to protect PDFs from being opened by someone not allowed.[24][25]
  • Redaction: Supports removing sensitive information in a PDF.[26]
  • PDF Compression: Allows compressing PDFs into smaller file sizes.[27]

In 2023, PDFgear announced PDFgear Chatbot, which is based on the GPT-3.5-turbo model, fully integrated with the offline PDFgear software. According to reports, it is the first PDF editor that integrates generative AI functionality into offline software.[28]

The Chatbot introduced multiple AI-powered features, including AI Copilot,[29][30] AI Summarization,[31][32] AI Translation,[33] AI Information Retrieval,[34] and AI Proofreading.[35]

System requirements

[edit]

The minimum system requirements for PDFgear are as follows:

  • macOS: macOS 10.14 or later; 512 MB of RAM (1 GB recommended); 200 MB of available hard disk space.[37]
  • iOS: iOS 14.0 or later; 30 MB of available hard disk space.[38]
