He is best known for his roles as The Bard in the Emmy-nominated Netflix series The Decameron and as Erland in the Sky Original drama Un Amore. Selikovsky has appeared in numerous Austrian and Italian feature films and television productions and is also the frontman of the bilingual soul-pop band N.I.K.O. [1]
Early life and family
[edit]Selikovsky was born in Vienna, Austria, into a family with a strong background in film. His father, Hans Selikovsky, is an award-winning director of photography and filmmaker. His brothers, Markus Selikovsky and Simon Selikovsky, are both established cinematographers. Growing up in this creative environment had a formative impact on Nikolai’s artistic development, influencing his approach to cinema, music, and performance.
Education
[edit]Selikovsky earned his degree in Theater, Film, and Media Studies (TFM) at the University of Vienna. In 2012, he participated in the Erasmus exchange program in Rome and later formally enrolled at DAMS (Discipline delle Arti, della Musica e dello Spettacolo) at Roma Tre University. He also studied acting in New York under the guidance of Susan Batson and Carl Ford.
Career
[edit]Acting
[edit]Selikovsky made his screen debut at age 19 with the leading role in the Austrian film Sturmfrei (2009).[2] He gained wider recognition for his role as Thomas in the 2017 cult comedy film Die Migrantigen[3] , directed by Arman T. Riahi. His multilingual ability (German, Italian, English, and French) has enabled him to take on diverse roles in international productions.
He portrayed:
- The Bard in The Decameron (Netflix, 2024)
- Erland in Un Amore (Sky Original, 2024)
- A supporting role in L’ultima volta che siamo stati bambini (2023), directed by Claudio Bisio
He has also appeared in TV series such as:
- Vorstadtweiber
- SOKO Donau
- Dennstein & Schwarz
- Ziemlich russische Freunde
In 2020, he was nominated for Best Actor at the Pigneto Film Festival for his performance in the short film Anna, again.
Selikovsky is known for his transformative acting style, often undergoing physical and psychological transformations for his roles.
Music
[edit]Selikovsky performs under the name N.I.K.O. and has released several albums blending soul, funk, pop, and hip-hop influences. His debut album, Dichter der Großstadt (2010), was followed by Zwischen Asphalt und Milchstraße (2014) and Unter Strom (2018), the latter funded via a successful crowdfunding campaign.[4]
He frequently performs in both German and Italian and has toured throughout Europe in cities including Vienna, Cologne, Salzburg, and Munich.
In 2025, he released the bilingual album Hallo & Ciao, co-produced with Federico Torri and Lukas Fellner. The album was not made available on streaming platforms as a protest against exploitative practices in the music industry.
Notable songs from the album include:
- "Hallo & Ciao" – about the lightness of travel
- "Solo un Viennese" – an ironic love letter to Rome
- "Lady Godard" – dedicated to late professor Elisabeth Büttner
- "Egal wo du bist" – a tribute to his grandmother
- "Wart nen Moment" – written with Mahir Jahmal, addressing grief and suicide
- "Riconciliazione" – dedicated to his partner Laura Sinceri
Directing
[edit]In addition to acting and music, Selikovsky has directed over 20 music videos[5] and two short films, both of which were screened at international film festivals. His directing style is known for its blend of visual storytelling, rhythm, and emotional tone, often intersecting with his musical background.
Personal life
[edit]Selikovsky resides in Rome, Italy. In 2022, the sudden death of his close friend and bandmate Mahir Jahmal significantly influenced his creative direction, especially on the album Hallo & Ciao, which features songs written and performed with Jahmal.
