Mike Coppinger is an American sports journalist and boxing analyst. He reports extensively on major fight news, contract negotiations, and promotional developments in boxing. He is currently the Senior Insider for The Ring Magazine and co-hosts the weekly program Inside The Ring on DAZN with Max Kellerman.[1] Coppinger is a voting member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame (as of 2021)[2] and has received multiple awards from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).[3] He previously served as lead boxing reporter for ESPN from 2021 to 2025.[4]
Early reporting (2009–2020)
[edit]Coppinger began his career covering boxing in 2009 as an intern at USA Today and worked as a freelance ringside reporter until 2015.[5] He later became a senior boxing writer for The Athletic, focusing on the business and promotional side of the sport, and contributed reporting and analysis to BoxingScene.com.[6]
During this period, he co-hosted the podcast The Pug and Copp Boxing Show with journalist Lance Pugmire, providing analysis and regular news updates on major boxing developments.
ESPN (2021–2025)
[edit]Coppinger joined ESPN in 2021 as the network's lead boxing reporter and on-air analyst.[7] He delivered breaking news, long-form features, and digital reporting across ESPN platforms, including ESPN.com, SportsCenter, and the network’s combat sports coverage. His reporting included major title fights, fighter negotiations, promotional disputes, and features on UFC and WWE events.[8]
He regularly appeared as an analyst on fight-night desk segments, contributing to live coverage of major events.
The Ring Magazine and DAZN (2025–present)
[edit]In April 2025, Coppinger became the Senior Insider for The Ring Magazine.[9] Later that year, in November 2025, he began co-hosting the weekly studio show Inside The Ring alongside Max Kellerman. The program streams worldwide on DAZN and features analysis of rankings, title changes, bout previews, and interviews with fighters.[10]
Notable incidents
[edit]In July 2023, Coppinger’s credential request to cover the Errol Spence Jr.–Terence Crawford bout was denied by Premier Boxing Champions (PBC). Independent media outlets reported the incident, pointing out that PBC did not provide a public explanation.[11][12]
In October 2021, he was involved in a widely reported exchange with Top Rank chairman Bob Arum during a media event.[13]
In June 2022, Floyd Mayweather Jr. disputed the details Coppinger reported regarding negotiations for a potential Errol Spence Jr.–Terence Crawford fight, stating that some publicly circulated information was inaccurate.[14]
Awards and recognition
[edit]Coppinger has received multiple awards from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), including two First Place wins in the 2019 BWAA Writing Awards for "Investigative Reporting" and "News Story."[15] He also received an Honorable Mention for Investigative Reporting in the 2021 BWAA Bernie Awards.[16] Coppinger is a voting member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.[17]
