The firm manages assets for individual (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retail_investor) and institutional (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institutional_investor) clients, including banks, pension funds (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pension_fund), insurers, sovereign wealth funds (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_wealth_fund), family offices (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_office), charities, and advisors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_adviser).

M&G Investments operates in 39 locations across 27 markets and is part of M&G plc (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%26G), an international savings and investment business seeking to give everyone real confidence to put their money to work. [4]The company employs over 6,000 people globally. The company recently launched its “Intelligence Connected” brand proposition, which reflects its approach of leveraging a global network of investment teams to connect the dots to identify investment opportunities for clients. This strategy integrates strong research capabilities and the diverse experience and perspectives of experts across multiple asset classes.

M&G Investments is recognised for its global fixed income expertise (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed_income). The firm is also one of the largest private markets (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_market_assets) investors in Europe and among leading players globally with private markets accounting for around 25% of its total assets under management. M&G has a strong heritage in equity innovation and operates a comprehensive global real estate (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commercial_property) platform, managing real estate debt and equity investments across multiple regions.

History

[edit]

Pre-2000

[edit]

M&G Investments traces its origins to 1870, when American engineer John George White founded J.G. White Inc., a construction company in the United States. J.G. White was involved in major infrastructure projects, including subway construction, and expanded operations to the United Kingdom around 1900, establishing offices at 9 Cloak Lane (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cloak_Lane&redirect=no), London.[5]

Another significant figure in the company’s early history was George Booth (1877–1971) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Macaulay_Booth), a member of the Alfred Booth shipping family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Booth_and_Company) and noted intellectual. During World War I, Booth served as Munitions Minister in the British war cabinet at the request of Prime Minister David Lloyd George (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Lloyd_George). On a visit to the United States, Booth met J.G. White and subsequently acquired the UK subsidiary of J.G. White after the war.[6]

The company was responsible for constructing several notable buildings in London, such as the Ritz (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ritz_Hotel,_London) and Waldorf (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Waldorf_Hilton,_London) Hotels, and for building tramways across Britain. The financing of large public projects like tramways often required local authorities to raise capital. To facilitate this, Booth established a subsidiary called Municipal and General Securities, which would become the forerunner of M&G Investments. The practice of raising funds for public projects was common in the United States and had been pioneered by J.G. White Inc.[7]

Inspired by the mutual fund concept developed in the United States, Booth adapted the idea for the UK market. Through the Municipal and General (“M&G”) subsidiary, later renamed White-Drummond, Booth launched the First British Unit Trust (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_trust) on 23 April 1931 (St George’s Day). This fund allowed investors to pool their money and invest in a fixed portfolio of 24 blue-chip companies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_chip_(stock_market)) , with the portfolio remaining unchanged for 20 years. It was the first fund of its kind in Europe.[8]

Ian Fairbairn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Fairbairn_(rower)), recruited by Booth to manage the First British Unit Trust, played a pivotal role in the development of the UK unit trust industry. Fairbairn, an Eton (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eton_College) scholar and LSE (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_School_of_Economics) graduate, advocated for encouraging thrift among small savers and enabling them to benefit directly from economic growth. He is widely regarded as the architect of M&G Investments and a key figure in the British investment industry.[9]

In 1954, M&G Investments introduced the Thrift Plan, enabling regular monthly contributions to investment funds, a practice previously limited to wealthier individuals. The Dividend Fund was launched in 1964, pioneering income-focused investment funds in the UK.

M&G Investments’ leadership in fixed income began in the early 1990s with the launch of the Corporate Bond Fund, followed by the UK’s first High Yield Corporate Bond Fund in 1998.

In March 1999, Prudential plc (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prudential_plc) acquired M&G Investments for £1.9 billion, choosing to preserve the M&G Investments brand and its historic identity rather than rebranding.

2000 – 2020

[edit]

M&G Investments significantly expanded its investment capabilities and geographic reach during this period. In 2006, the firm launched the M&G European Property and M&G Asia Property strategies, alongside the M&G Optimal Income strategy, a flexible bond fund that became one of its flagship offerings.

In the same year, M&G Investments launched the Bond Vigilantes blog, a platform to provide insights and commentary on global fixed income markets. Written by members of M&G Investments’ bond team, the blog covers topics such as interest rates, credit markets, inflation, and economic trends. It has since become a recognised source of thought leadership for investment professionals, offering analysis on market developments and policy shifts.

By 2008, M&G Investments introduced the M&G Global Dividend strategy. The following years saw continued innovation, including the launch of the M&G UK Residential Property strategy in 2013 and the M&G Global Floating Rate High Yield strategy in 2014. In 2015, M&G introduced Capital Solutions (Real Estate), further strengthening its real estate investment platform.

In 2017, Prudential plc announced the merger of M&G Investments with its UK and European operations to form a combined savings and investment division under the brand ‘M&GPrudential’.[10]

The M&G Positive Impact strategy was launched in 2018, meaning individuals could for the first time, invest in companies that specifically aim to have a positive impact (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_investing) on society, as well as aiming to deliver investment returns.

A major corporate milestone occurred in October 2019, when M&G demerged from its parent company group and was listed independently on the London Stock Exchange (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Stock_Exchange) under the new name M&G plc, marking a new chapter in its history.[11]

2020 – Present

[edit]

From 2020 onwards, M&G Investments has continued to evolve its investment platform with a strong focus on innovation, sustainability (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socially_responsible_investing), and private assets.

In 2021, the firm launched the Catalyst investment team, it’s £5 billion purpose-led, flexible strategy aimed at identifying and supporting transformative businesses.

In 2022, M&G Investments acquired responsibility (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Responsability_investments), a pioneer in impact investing, expanding its sustainable investment capabilities.[12] That year also saw the launch of an initial set of propositions across Europe aligned with the UK PruFund and of the European Living strategy across Europe.

In 2023, M&G introduced the M&G Asian Corporate Bond strategy.

In 2024 M&G Real Estate (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%26G_Real_Estate) acquired a majority stake in BauMont Real Estate Capital Limited (BauMont), a leading European investment manager.[13]

In 2025, M&G Investments further strengthened its position in alternative investments by acquiring a majority stake in P Capital Partners (PCP), a leading European private credit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_credit) business, reflecting its commitment to long-term value creation and diversification (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diversification_(finance).[14]
