Avdhesh Kumar (born 4 April 1975), popularly known as Jumman Mistry, is an Indian grassroots innovator and auto mechanic from Sonwarsha village, Warisaliganj, Nawada, Bihar, India. He is known for creating useful and low-cost machines from scrap materials, focusing on rural development and sustainable technology.

Early life and education

Avdhesh Kumar was born on 4 April 1975 in Sonwarsha village, Warisaliganj, Nawada district, Bihar, India. He completed his schooling locally and passed the 12th standard. From an early age, he showed interest in mechanical work and rural problem-solving, often experimenting with scrap materials to build small tools and machines.

Career

Avdhesh Kumar began his career as an auto mechanic in Nawada, Bihar. Over time, he became known for his innovative ideas and practical solutions that transformed scrap materials into useful machines for rural applications. His approach reflects the concept of "kabad se jugaad" (innovation from waste).

Major inventions

  • 1996 – Alternative fuel motorbike — experimented with a two-wheeler capable of running on alternative fuel sources.
  • 2016 – Water conservation device — designed to prevent water tank overflow and reduce water wastage.
  • 2017 – Automatic Railway crossing gate Hooting and Lighting System — created to enhance safety at unmanned railway crossings. For this innovation, he received a certificate and cash reward from Indian Railways.[1]

  • 2020 – Air-conditioned PPE kit and locust deterrent device developed during the COVID-19 pandemic.[4]

Environmental initiatives

In 2024, Jumman Mistry launched an environmental campaign titled Ped Lagaye, Free Service Paaye, under which he provides free or discounted e-rickshaw servicing to customers who plant trees.[7]

Through this initiative, he aimed to promote environmental awareness and encourage vehicle owners to contribute to tree plantation drives.

He also promotes the use of e-rickshaws as an eco-friendly mode of transport in rural areas.

Awards and recognition
