Business Career

Early Career

In 1998, at the age of 19, Ribbeck founded Theory Evolution an information technology company focused on designing and implementing small business and corporate networks, along with PC system maintenance and administration. In the initial years he built Theory Evolution into a multimillion-dollar business with over 350 clients, and in 2005 after client requests began building websites which was the beginning of the advertising and design branch.  After completing a few websites Theory Evolution began branching out into multiple areas of advertising campaigns, product design, 3d animation, visual effects and music production becoming a hybrid agency of technology, media and design. Theory has worked on a large array of clientele including Nike, Anheuser Busch, Izzo’s Illegal Burrito, and many other brands.

During this time Ribbeck started a Blu-Flame Advertising which was a large direct competitor of Red Plum and Valpak. The company expanded throughout Louisiana but eventually was folded into Theory Evolution due to the low revenue high expense nature of the business. In 2009 Ribbeck started the Green Flame Co-op which was a waste cooking oil acquisition and distribution company that refined waste vegetable oil into bio-fuel. The goal was to build out a large network of bio-fuel stations for the commercial trucking industry. After building out a successful network and data platform the project was sold in 2010 for an undisclosed amount to a larger waste oil company.

Alpha Bravo

In 2013 Ribbeck started Alpha Bravo which was a military vehicle restoration company that specialized in HMMWV's and LMTV's.

Stark Form

In 2010 Ribbeck started luxury furniture design and manufacturing company. The brand is known for combining handcrafted craftsmanship, distinctive surface textures, and minimalist proportions, using fine hardwoods and contemporary production methods.<ref name="adesignprofile">{{cite web |title=Joshua Ribbeck – Designer Profile |url=https://competition.adesignaward.com/designer.php?profile=127019 |website=A’ Design Award & Competition |access-date=5 November 2025}}</ref>

Ribbeck established Stark Form from his early interest in architecture and construction, drawing inspiration from his family background in design and building. The company’s furniture line emphasizes proportion, material efficiency, and precision detailing.

Under Ribbeck’s direction, Stark Form and its products have received multiple international design honors. His notable recognitions from the '''A’ Design Award & Competition''' include:

Stark Pen Company

In 2016 Ribbeck started Stark Pen (often styled Stark Pen Company) as a luxury writing-instruments brand. The company is headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and specializes in handcrafted writing instruments that merge artisanal craftsmanship with fine materials.

Stark Pen was established as an off-shoot of Ribbeck’s broader design enterprises. Ribbeck, already operating in furniture and product design under his brand Stark Form, expanded into luxury pens, leveraging his interest in materials such as cocobolo wood, metals and other premium finishes.

The company offers several collections, such as the “Elite Series”, “Gem Series”, and “Noble Series”, and provides customization services for bespoke writing instruments. Stark Pen markets its products as heirloom-quality objects, crafted at a high level of detail and often targeted to collectors and connoisseurs of fine writing instruments.

Ribbeck has commented that for product design he focuses on both form and usability: “looks and usability. I think you can have the best of both.” While his main background is in graphic design and furniture, his interest in writing instruments stems from his exploration of fine materials and systems of manufacturing.

Ribbeck won bronze for the Stark Elite Pen in the product design category for the 2016 IDA Design Awards.

Fellowship for Animals

Fellowship for Animals HQ

In 2017 Ribbeck began focusing on his plan of building the most advanced animal shelter ever designed.  The Fellowship for Animals (FFA) is a nonprofit animal welfare initiative conceived as a comprehensive, sustainable, and community-oriented model for modern animal care. The project is the vision of designer and founder Ribbeck, who led the concept development, planning, and overall philosophy behind the facility. Architectural development and execution were carried out by Seaux + Pierce Architects, in collaboration with Theory Evolution, which provided interior, landscape, and sustainability design.

The FFA campus is a 20,000+ square-foot animal health and adoption complex composed of multiple interconnected buildings arranged around a public courtyard. Designed as a next-generation prototype for animal shelters nationwide, the project integrates advanced animal care systems, sustainable technologies, and public engagement spaces. Ribbeck’s leadership shaped both the conceptual framework and operational strategy, while Seaux + Pierce Architects refined the architectural form, programming, and construction design.

The facility reflects Josh Ribbeck’s long-term vision to create a replicable, self-sustaining model capable of transforming animal welfare in Baton Rouge and beyond. His goals include eliminating parish euthanasia rates, reducing feral and homeless populations, improving adoption outcomes, and educating the public about responsible pet ownership. Ribbeck’s forward-thinking approach emphasizes combining technology, architectural innovation, sustainability, and community participation into a unified system.

Ribbeck spent several years researching veterinary practices, animal shelter logistics, community needs, and green building strategies. The resulting masterplan proposes a modern, environmentally efficient, and operationally streamlined facility intended to set a national standard for humane animal care.

Shelter priorities include:

  • Echo Pet Tracker – a state of the art tracking system for pets that requires no subscription and a massive 3-4 mile range. This
  • A dedicated focus on solving the feral cat population worldwide by implementing a central based app and tracking system. Along with custom built feral shelters that allow the care takers to work more efficiently
  • Flexible layouts supporting both public engagement and animal welfare
  • Production of FFA’s own private high quality food line that is affordable. Cost +10%.
  • Facilities and Features

FFA incorporates extensive animal-centered infrastructure, including:

  • 192 self-cleaning dog kennels, 200 cat condos, and antimicrobial materials
  • State-of-the-art treatment, surgical, and exam areas
  • Rehabilitation center with aqua training
  • Automated kennel doors with outdoor access
  • Indoor training arenas and expansive play yards
  • Public education and meeting center
  • 24/7 webcams and PET PASSPORT/RFID adoption systems

Sustainability and Innovation

One of Ribbeck’s core goals was to create a fully sustainable, LEED Platinum–level building. Major systems include:

  • Over 110,000 gallons of rainwater retention and harvesting
  • Green roofs with drought-tolerant landscaping
  • Geothermal HVAC and IQAir hospital-grade purification
  • A 87 kW solar photovoltaic array
  • 100% self-sufficient irrigation through harvested water These systems were integrated by Seaux + Pierce Architects and Theory Evolution as part of a whole-building sustainable strategy.

Operations and Governance

FFA’s committee is led by Josh and Jennifer Ribbeck, with a small, highly involved board whose members are expected to actively participate in operations, animal care, and community outreach. Ribbeck’s leadership continues to guide the organizational direction, architectural refinement, and long-term planning of the Fellowship.

Ribbeck’s vision emphasizes long-term financial independence. After initial construction funding through investment strategies for primary revue. Then secondary revenue via product sales and donations. The facility aims to operate through self-generated revenue. This model is intended to reduce the ongoing burden of public fundraising and enable replication in other cities.

IsoPets

To compliment the Fellowship for Animals brand, Ribbeck is developing a line of plushie toys, clothing and children’s cartoons called “IsoPets”

Design philosophy

Ribbeck’s work emphasizes the fusion of craft, minimal material usage and a respect for environment and proportion. His furniture designs reflect an aim to "create maximum effect with a minimum of material," and his overall approach links human creativity, environment and technology. starkform.com
