Incelcore (also known as ePunk) is a underground microgenre of rock music that incorporates elements of Grunge, Emo, and Punk with a majority of the artists being based in The United States. Incel is an acronym for the term involuntary celibate—basically, a man who is unable to find a sexual partner. The genre serves as a catalyst for far-right political beliefs in youth culture in a similar pattern as Rock Against Communism in the 70s and 80s. It became popular online sometime around 2019. The genre is rooted in 4chan 'culture', with some band names like NEET (acronym of Not in Employment, Education or Training), Fried by Flouride, and Anhero (4chan slang for suicide) referencing popular jokes in the message board. A lot of incelcore artists don't use the term incel as it's original meaning of an involuntary celibate, but more as an internet shorthand for their far-right beliefs and misogyny.[1]
The genre itself started with Negative XP/School Shooter's (real name Alan S. Kim) debut EP. „MK Ultra Support Group Vol. 1“ posted to SoundCloud in 2019.
Reception
[edit]Incelcore is seen as problematic for multiple reasons, the biggest one being the controversial history of people in the incel community and the concept of it as a whole. Another reason being the bad reputations of some incelcore artists such as Negative XP and Fried by Flouride for accusations of pedophilia and sexual assault and repeated homophobia, racism, neo-nazism, misogyny, and transphobia.
As the incel movement grew, it became more explicitly misogynistic and crossed over with the white power movement. Several mass murders have been perpetrated by self-identified incels, including the 2014 Isla Vista killings in which 6 were killed along with the perpetrator; the 2018 Toronto van attack, in which 11 were killed; the 2015 Umpqua Community College shooting, in which 9 were killed along with the perpetrator; and the 2018 Tallahasee shooting, in which two women were killed. Numerous other mass killings have been perpetrated by individuals believed to be related to the incel community. While not all “incels” are white, the movement is strongly linked to white supremacist ideology, and non-white incels often express white supremacist beliefs involving hatred of their own race along with hatred of others.[1]
One of the tracks on „MK Ultra Support Group Vol. 1“, a song named „Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Ruined a Generation of Women”, humourized e-girls and dissed popular Netflix movie „Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”, is seen as misogynistic because of it's lyrics along with him referencing conspiracy theories, using slurs, misogynistic labels, etc. and has recieved a lot of backlash online and by fans of the movie. This controversy caused him to change his artist name from School Shooter to Negative XP. His music has also been linked to the perpetrator of the Antioch High School shooting, Solomon Henderson, as Solomon was a fan of his and owns his merch, though Negative XP himself hasn't commented on the matter.
In a now deleted tweet, online music blogger Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop said:
I’m wondering what kind of rut you need to be stuck in to be recording lo-fi incel rock songs that are all just Wavves ripoffs and upload them to soundcloud
Negative XP reacted to this by releasing "You Shouldn’t be Allowed to Listen to Music if you Watch the Needledrop", a disstrack targeted at the blogger.
The phrase "MK Ultra victim" refers to all the people he has released songs about in his career and he has a total of 4 EPs with it in the title[2]: "MK Ultra Support Group Vol. 1", "MK Ultra Support Group Vol. 2", "MK Ultra Support Group Vol. 3", and "MK Ultra Support Group Vol. 4".
Incelcore has recieved immense backlash on social media, but despite everything it is still quite popular especially in specific communities on TikTok and Tumblr such as TCC (True Crime Community) or dedicated incel spaces.
Incelcore versions of popular songs also exist, such as NEET's "Creep" being a cover of Radiohead's song of the same name, however the instrumental and voice effects are from the incelcore genre.
Characteristics
[edit]Incelcore typically uses Lo-Fi garage rock production with distorted instruments and fuzzy vocals, the lyrics tend to mention loneliness, hatred of women, hatred against ethnic minorities, violent fantasies of mass shootings, depression, and suicide or self-harm.
Many people say the genre is based off of Weezer's and Wavves' music, especially Weezer's "Pinkerton" album, in a degrading way. It is believed that the incel community's gravitation towards Weezer is partially due to a history of problematic lyrics regarding women (particularly Asian women). Other bands they're (supposedly) influenced by are Brand New and Taking Back Sunday.
Incelcore as a label is commonly associated with a low production punk rock-inspired sound with 'chronically online' or depressing lyrics, though the genre can range from hyperpop to metal to even rap. Many artists who don't claim to be incelcore are reeled into this label due to their depressive or "internet-like" nature such as wifiskeleton.
