Hares Youssef (born 16 November 1964) is a Syrian-born Ukrainian businessman, philanthropist, and writer. He is the founder of Hares Group Holding and the GAIIA Foundation, and has been noted for his involvement in Ukrainian business and politics.[1][2]

Early life and education

Youssef was born in Latakia, Syria, to a low-income family. He studied economics in Kyiv and later defended a PhD at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1999.[1]

Career

In the 1990s, Youssef established businesses in Ukraine across real estate, metallurgy, industrial engineering, and energy.[1] In 1995, his assets were consolidated into Hares Group Holding, registered in Austria. By 2004 the group reportedly had a turnover of $420 million.[1]

In 2007, Ukrainian president Viktor Yushchenko appointed Youssef as an envoy and adviser for Middle Eastern affairs.[2]

Philanthropy

Youssef has been active in charitable initiatives in Ukraine and internationally. He founded the 40 Foundation and later the GAIIA Foundation, which supports humanitarian and environmental projects.[3]

He has also published philosophical works on ecology and economics, including the book Gaiia (2020), which has been translated into multiple languages.[4] French media have featured his environmental philosophy in the context of climate conferences.[5]
