  • Comment: The fact that the article uncritically reports that the company sells "an AI powered chatbox [sic] to converse with trees" is enough to decline this draft on its own. pythoncoder (talk | contribs) 22:16, 2 September 2025 (UTC)

EcoMatcher is a Hong Kong–based company that became a certified B Corporation[1] in 2018. It provides technology-driven solutions for tree planting, working with companies and individuals to support reforestation efforts. The organization collaborates with vetted NGOs and foundations across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South America to facilitate tree planting initiatives.[2] Its platform incorporates blockchain-based systems to document and verify tree-planting activities.[3]

History

[edit]

Founded in 2016 by Dutch entrepreneur Bas Fransen[4][5], EcoMatcher was established to address transparency challenges in tree-planting programs. Fransen, previously an executive at Philips, IBM, and ASML Holding, he later transitioned to a focus on sustainability and social entrepreneurship. The company has since developed tools to support corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) programs, including applications for employee engagement, customer loyalty, carbon offsetting, and corporate gifting. Its platform integrates with CRM systems, e-commerce platforms, and APIs, and offers impact dashboards for participating organizations.[6]

Technology

[edit]

EcoMatcher’s proprietary blockchain system, TreeChain, records data for each tree planted.[7] [8] This includes GPS coordinates, planting dates, species information, and photographs. Additional tools such as TreeTracker and TreeCorder provide access to tree-specific data, including farmer profiles and biodiversity metrics[9].

The platform also supports features like satellite imagery, AI-powered chat interfaces (TreeChat), and audio recordings from forest environments (ForestSounds). EcoMatcher licenses its technology to partners such as Investancia for large-scale reforestation projects.[10]

Projects and Partners

[edit]

EcoMatcher works with 15 tree-planting organizations across multiple regions. Partners are selected based on criteria including transparency, community impact, biodiversity outcomes, and governance standards. The company has collaborated with a range of corporate clients, including QNET[11], Dialog, Grab[12], Schaeffler, Mandarin Oriental[13], TG Escapes[14], Brunel, Hogan Lovells[15], FWD Group[16], Procter & Gamble[17], and the Storey Group[18].

Recognition

[edit]

In addition to its B Corporation certification, EcoMatcher has been the subject of academic research. In 2022, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School published two case studies on the company through Harvard Business Publishing Education: EcoMatcher: Beyond the Triple Bottom Line[19] and EcoMatcher: Daring to Make a Difference[20]
