Demos Federico is a two-disc compilation album by American musician Holly Beth Vincent, released under the name Holly & the Italians. It was released on February 25, 2003, by Wounded Bird Records.[1][2] The album features a selection of demo recordings created by Vincent between 1979 and 1998, including early versions of published songs and previously unreleased material.[3]

Background

[edit]

The compilation was curated with assistance from Vincent’s brother, Nick Vincent, and digitally remastered at Arabellum Studios in Albany, New York.[2] The album's recordings show Vincent's evolution from punk-inspired new wave in the late 1970s to more introspective alternative rock recordings in the 1990s.[3]

The track "Mercy" (included in two different demo versions on the album) was also featured on the soundtrack of the 1993 film Untamed Heart, starring Christian Slater and Marisa Tomei.[4]

Reception

[edit]

The album received positive reviews from music critics. The music magazine Trouser Press described the album as "a strong two-disc set of demos dating from 1979 to 1998," and highlighted tracks such as "Hey Christine," "Unoriginal Sin," and "Mercy" as "potent additions to the Vincent canon."[5]

The music blog Post-Punk Monk published an in-depth review, praising the collection's historical value. The reviewer noted that the two discs effectively document Vincent's stylistic evolution, with the first disc focusing on her early punk-inspired material and the second covering her more intimate, alternative rock recordings from the 1990s. The review stated that the compilation provides "a wealth of music" that "fleshes out the long but spotted career of perhaps the best unsung female rock star ever." The author specifically praised the track "Mercy," calling one of its two versions "one of the best rock songs I've ever heard."[3]
