Climate Healers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental organization founded in 2007 by Sailesh Rao, an Indian-American systems engineer and environmentalist. Based in the United States, the organization promotes plant-based diets and systems thinking as strategies for mitigating climate change and restoring ecological balance.[1][2]
Overview
[edit]Climate Healers describes its purpose as facilitating a global “systems transformation” to reverse human-driven ecological degradation. The group’s outreach connects environmental science, ethics, and dietary change, emphasizing veganism as a practical and moral climate solution.[3]
Founding and history
[edit]The organization was established in 2007 by engineer Sailesh Rao following his career in Internet communications technology and his shift toward environmental advocacy after seeing An Inconvenient Truth.[4] Climate Healers began developing education and research programs linking dietary change to greenhouse-gas reduction.
Activities
[edit]Vegan Convergence of the Peoples (V-COP)
[edit]Since 2018, Climate Healers has hosted the Vegan Convergence of the Peoples (V-COP), a biannual international online forum uniting scientists, environmentalists, and activists to discuss non-violent, post-carbon futures.[5]
Advocacy and public engagement
[edit]The organization campaigns for reductions in animal agriculture and promotion of plant-based food systems as central to climate policy.[5] Its members and founder have participated in events such as the Oxford Union debate on veganism and multiple COP-related side forums.[2]
Educational initiatives
[edit]Climate Healers produces open-access climate education materials and collaborates with independent media, universities, and non-governmental organizations to integrate dietary and ethical perspectives into sustainability discourse.[3]
Philosophy
[edit]Climate Healers frames climate restoration as a moral as well as technical challenge, invoking the principle of Ahimsa—non-violence toward all living beings—as the foundation of sustainable living.[4] Its work emphasizes “climate healing” rather than mitigation, suggesting that ecological systems can recover through a transition to compassionate, regenerative human practices.
Recognition and reception
[edit]Coverage in media outlets such as *WBEZ Chicago Public Media*, *International Business Times*, and *Vegan FTA* has profiled the group’s efforts to connect veganism with mainstream climate debates.[1][2][3] Independent environmental publications including *Countercurrents* have discussed the organization’s approach to food-system reform.[5]
