Avery Ching is an American computer engineer and entrepreneur. He is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Aptos Labs, a layer-1 blockchain company known for developing the Aptos blockchain network. He previously served as a principal engineer at Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook), where he worked on the Diem blockchain project. In 2025, Ching was appointed to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) Global Markets Advisory Committee’s Digital Asset Markets Subcommittee.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Ching was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii.[2] He earned his Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. degrees in computer engineering from Northwestern University.[3]
Career
[edit]Meta Platforms
[edit]Ching joined Meta Platforms in 2011, where he worked as a principal engineer on large-scale distributed systems and later served as one of the lead engineers on the company’s Diem blockchain project.[3]
Aptos Labs
[edit]In 2022, Ching co-founded Aptos Labs with Mo Shaikh, both of whom had previously worked on Diem. Aptos Labs launched the Aptos blockchain network later that year, emphasizing scalability, reliability, and safety in decentralized systems.[4]
Under Ching’s leadership, Aptos Labs formed partnerships with major institutions such as Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Mastercard, BlackRock, and Franklin Templeton to develop blockchain-based financial infrastructure.[3] In May 2025, he was featured in The Block discussing the integration of artificial intelligence with tokenized assets and decentralized systems.[5]
Government and policy work
[edit]In 2025, Ching testified before the United States House Committee on Agriculture regarding blockchain technology and digital asset infrastructure.[2] The same year, he was appointed to the CFTC’s Digital Asset Markets Subcommittee, where he contributed to policy recommendations on digital asset regulation.[1]
Recognition
[edit]Ching has been profiled by Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering and recognized for his role in advancing global blockchain innovation and financial inclusion.[3]
