Armature Puppet is an independent workshop and creative brand founded in 2019 in Ukraine. It specializes in the design and manufacture of professional tools for stop-motion animation. Known for producing custom and small-scale production of animation armatures, rig systems, and mechanical components for puppet animation.
History
[edit]The project was founded by director and animator Danylo Maliuha in collaboration with generalist engineer Oleksii Shaparenko. The idea for the workshop emerged in response to the lack of professional jointed armatures and general absence of domestically produced stop-motion tools.
Their first joint project — a fully brass armature — was handmade in 2019. Later, they began manufacturing steel armatures using laser cutting, CNC milling, and micro-welding.
In 2021, the workshop began releasing compact rig systems and X/Y axis Winder mechanisms. One of the flagship products was the Tiny XY Aluminium Winder System V.2 (2021), engineered by Shaparenko.
Products
[edit]- Jointed armatures for stop-motion puppets (custom and small-series models)
- Rig systems for fixing puppets and props in the frame
- Steel animation hands with replaceable aluminum wire fingers

Technologies
[edit]The workshop combines traditional handmade techniques with digital prototyping:
- Laser cutting of steel and brass sheets
- CNC milling and turning
- Spot micro-welding and argon welding
- Threaded assemblies and precision connectors
Public Presence
[edit]Armature Puppet equipment has been used in both independent and commercial animation projects in Ukraine and internationally. The brand has operated via Etsy and published its development process on YouTube and Flickr. In 2024–2025, Danylo Maliuha published a detailed history of the workshop and tool production in Ukraine on Medium. [1]
