History
[edit]The 1138th Engineer Company of the Missouri Army National Guard was established as part of the state’s expansion of engineer forces. In 1967, it became a subordinate unit of the 1140th Engineer Battalion, under the 35th Engineer Brigade, and has remained headquartered in Farmington, Missouri.[1].
During the Cold War, the company focused on combat engineer tasks such as mobility, counter mobility, and survivability. It also responded to state emergency missions such as flood relief and tornado recovery across Missouri. The company stayed mostly stateside.
In recent years, the 1138th was mobilized for the Global War on Terror. In the early 2000s, the unit deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, conducting route clearance, base construction, and infrastructure repair[2].
In 2012–2013, nearly 100 soldiers deployed to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, where they provided route clearance and engineer support in combat zones [3][4][5].

The company has remained active in overseas missions. In 2018–2019, elements deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield, contributing to U.S. and coalition base construction and engineering operations throughout the CENTCOM region[6][7]. In 2022, the 1138th conducted AT in Morocco for African Lion 22 [8][9][10]
For state missions, the 1138th engineer Company provided help in the Great Flood of 1993, the Missouri River floods of 2007, 2011, and 2019, and the 2011 Joplin tornado and the May 2025 St. Louis Tornado.
During the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021), the 1138th helped run and support logistics and medical operations statewide.
