C. Davood Chalikkal (also written as C. Dawood) is an Indian journalist, author, and the Managing Editor of MediaOne TV, a Malayalam news channel in Kerala, India.[1][2] He has been with MediaOne since the channel started in 2011.[1]
Career
[edit]Dawood works as the Managing Editor of MediaOne TV, a news channel that broadcasts in Malayalam.[3] Before joining MediaOne TV, he worked as Assistant Executive Editor at Madhyamam Daily, a Malayalam newspaper.[3] He has been working as a journalist for many years.[1]
Dawood says that MediaOne's news policy is to give voice to people who are not heard. He believes the channel should be "objective but not impartial" and stand with marginalized people.[1] The channel has covered major events like the anti-CAA protests, farmers' protests, and the 2020 Delhi riots.[1]
MediaOne broadcast ban
[edit]In January 2022, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry stopped MediaOne from broadcasting.[2][4] The government said the channel was denied security clearance by the Ministry of Home Affairs for "national security" reasons, but did not explain what those reasons were.[1][4]
Dawood said the channel was targeted because it was critical of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).[1][5] The Kerala High Court first upheld the ban in February 2022.[4] But in April 2023, the Supreme Court of India lifted the ban and ordered the government to give security clearance to MediaOne within four weeks.[6] The Supreme Court said there was no good reason for the ban.[6]
In July 2025, Dawood faced threats from CPI(M) workers who said they would "chop off his hands."[7] The Kerala Union of Working Journalists protested against these threats.[7]
Teaching and writing
[edit]Dawood teaches at MediaOne Academy, where he trains students in journalism.[8] He conducts master classes and workshops for journalism students. He has also spoken at the Indian School of Democracy about journalism and media.
In 2013, Dawood wrote a travelogue book called Gazza: Poralikalude Parudeesa (Gaza: Warriors' Paradise) about his travel experiences in Gaza.[9][10] The book talks about how people in Gaza live under Israeli occupation and blockade.[10] He was a speaker at the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL) 2025.[9]
Awards
[edit]Dawood won the Kambissery Karunakaran Menon Memorial Award for the Best Editorial in Malayalam Dailies.[3][11]
Education
[edit]He studied at Hyderabad Central University.[3]
