BHP Billiton is a multinational mining, metals, and petroleum company headquartered in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The company was founded in 1885 in Broken Hill, a mining town in central Australia.
In 2017, BHP Billiton was the world's largest mining company by market capitalisation,[4][5] and Australia's third-largest company by revenue,[6] with revenue that nearly tripled between 2004 and 2012.[7]
BHP Billiton was formed in 2001 through the merger of the Australian Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) and the Anglo–Dutch Billiton plc.[8] The Australian-registered BHP Billiton Limited had its primary listing on the Australian Securities Exchange, while the UK-registered BHP Billiton plc was primarily listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
In 2017, most of Billiton's assets were spun off and rebranded as South32, while the remaining company was renamed BHP.
