The BDO World Darts Championship was a professional darts tournament organised by the British Darts Organisation and was held every year between 1978 [en] to 2020 [en]. It was the only World Darts Championship until the 1993 split in darts [en], when 16 players including seven former champions left the BDO and set up a rival darts company called World Darts Council [en], now called the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The last tournament took place in 2020 before the British Darts Organisation went out of business in September 2020. The World Darts Federation announced plans to launch the WDF World Darts Championship, the first tournament took place for the first time in 2022 [en].[1][2]

The World Darts Championship was created by Mike Watterson [en], who was a sports promoter he also created the UK Snooker Championship and moved the World Snooker Championship to the Crucible Theatre [en] in 1977. While sitting in a barber's chair waiting for a haircut Watterson came up with the idea. A friend of Watterson, John Lowe [en], managed to convince him that the tournament would be easy to stage and he suggested Watterson to contact Olly Croft [en], who was head of the British Darts Organisation, to run the tournament. The first World Darts Championship took place in 1978 [en]. During the 1983 [en] tournament, a 23 year old qualifer from Ipswich, Keith Deller [en] won the tournament by beating the world's top three players back-to-back, John Lowe [en] number 3 in the world in the quarter-final, reigning champion and number 2 in the world Jocky Wilson [en] semi-final before beting world number 1 Eric Bristow in the final. During the 1990 [en] tournament, Singaporean (representing the USA), Paul Lim [en] hit the tournament's only 9-dart finish in the second round against Jack McKenna [en] from Ireland to win a bonus of £52,000 which was more than the eventual champion Phil Taylor [en] received. In 2019 [en], Glen Durrant [en] became the second player to win three consecutive Men's World Championships after Eric Bristow did it between 1984 [en] and 1986 [en], also Mikuru Suzuki [en] became the first Asian world darts champion in any form. The final BDO World Darts Championship took place in 2020 [en], Wayne Warren [en] became the oldest player ever to win a world title and was last World Darts Championship organised by the BDO before the collapse of the company. The World Darts Federation lauched the WDF World Darts Championship, with the first edition took place in 2022 [en].

The first World Darts Championship organised by the BDO was played at the Heart of the Midlands Club [en] in Nottingham in 1978. Between 1979 and 1985 the tournanment was held at Jollees [en] in Stoke-on-Trent. From 1986 to 2019 the tournament was held at the Lakeside Country Club [en] in Frimley Green [en], Surrey. The last tournament organised by the BDO was played at the Indigo at The O2 [en] in London.
