Avenging Allies, also known as Duel With Darkdevil!, is a graphic novel written by Tom DeFalco, drawn by Pat Olliffe, and published by Marvel Comics 2 as the third volume of the American comic book series Spider-Girl, following Mayday Parker / Spider-Girl, the daughter of Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson, as she tries to join A-Next, the next incarnation of the Avengers, flirting with Franklin Richards, while facing defeat against Reilly Tyne / Darkdevil and her uncle Kaine Parker, and teaming up with Speedball against Mr. Abnormal.[2][3][4]
Part One, Duel With Darkdevil!, was released July 14, 1999; Part Two, And now...The Avengers!, was released August 11, 1999; Part Three, A Man Called... Kaine!, was released September 8, 1999; Part Four, Swingin' N' Slammin' With Speedball, was released October 13, 1999; and Part Five, The Question--!, released November 10, 1999; while the annual, Misery!, was released July 28, 1999. Preceded by Like Father Like Daughter, it is followed by the story arc Turning Point.[5]
The series received a universally positive critical reception.[5][6][7][8][9]
Premise
[edit]The series follows Mayday Parker / Spider-Girl, worn to follow in her father's web-tracks, as she finds herself facing defeat and disgrace at the hands of her mentor and cousin Darkdevil, the Avengers of A-Next, and her uncle Kaine. Beset by problems in her civilian guise, Spider-Girl teams up with the Speedball to take on the flexible felon Mr. Abnormal.[10][11][12] Additionally, after temporarily losing access to her abilities as the result of a strong electric shock, another such shock not only restores Mayday's superpowers but also lets her extend her "adhesion field" through any object she sticks to.[13]
Reception
[edit]Avenging Allies received generally good reviews.[5][6][7][8][9]
