Abraham Alfonse Albert Gallatin (January 29, 1761 – August 12, 1849) was a Swiss-American ethnologist, linguist, politician, diplomat, representative, and the longest-serving United States Secretary of the Treasury. He was also a founder of New York University.
Honors
[change | change source]- The Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University honors his founding.
- Gallatin's portrait was on the front of the $500 United States Note, which was issued in 1862 to 1863.
- Gallatin's portrait was on the standard 1¼¢ stamp from 1967 to 1973.
- Friendship Hill National Historic Site, a 661-acre estate that includes Gallatin's beautifully restored home, is run by the National Park Service and is located within the boundaries of the Albert Gallatin School District in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. It is open to the public.
- The United States Department of the Treasury's highest career service award is the Albert Gallatin Award, named in his honor.
- USCGC Gallatin (WHEC-721), a 378-foot (115 m), a high-endurance United States Coast Guard cutter whose home port is in Charleston, South Carolina, is named after him.
