WeWork India is an Indian flexible workspace operator and the exclusive licensee of the WeWork brand in India. Launched in 2017, the company leases primarily Grade A office space from commercial developers and designs, builds, and operates those properties as flexible workspaces to global standards.[1][2] Its membership base includes multinational corporations, Fortune 500 companies, large domestic enterprises, MSMEs, startups, and individuals.[3][4]

History

[edit]

WeWork India was established in 2017 and began operations that year.[5][6][7] In 2017, the company opened its flagship centre in Bengaluru and launched its first centres in Mumbai and Gurgaon.[8][9]

In 2019, WeWork India introduced the WeWork All Access global membership offering.[10][11] In the same year, Karan Virwani was named to Forbes Asia's Asia 30 Under 30 list for Retail & E‑commerce.[12][13]

In 2020, the company expanded into Noida, Pune and Hyderabad, opened its 25th centre,[14][15] and received the Times Business Award for Best Co‑Working Space.[16]

In 2021, WeWork India launched WeWork On‑Demand and Virtual Office products.[17]

In 2022, the company was certified as a Great Place to Work for mid‑size organisations.[18]

In 2023, WeWork India acquired Zoapi Innovations Private Limited.[19][20][21]

In 2024, the company expanded operations to Delhi and Chennai, increased its managed office footprint, launched its 50th centre and introduced WeWork Workplace;[22][23][24] it was also named Most Socially Responsible Company of the Year at the ASSOCHAM 10th MSME Excellence Awards.[25]

In 2025, WeWork India received multiple industry awards, including the ET Human Capital Awards (Excellence in D&I Practices),[26] the ET Entrepreneur Awards (Co‑working Startup of the Year),[27] the ET Kaleido Awards (Best brand campaign — Start‑ups, Silver),[28] and the ET HRWorld Employee Experience Awards (Exceptional Employee Experience — Small & Mid‑Size).[29]

Business model

[edit]

WeWork India serves a diverse membership that ranges from multinational corporations and Fortune 500 clients to startups, SMBs, and individual professionals.[30] The company's business model includes both direct membership revenues and an operator model in which WeWork India operates centres on behalf of landlords and retains a portion of member revenues as operator fees.[31] For the three months ended June 30, 2025, Enterprise Members contributed 75.67% of Net Membership Fees, and International Clients contributed 65.93% of Net Membership Fees. The Weighted Average Membership Tenure with Large Enterprise Members as of June 30, 2025, was 31 months.[32]

WeWork India is majority owned and promoted by Embassy Group, a large Indian real‑estate developer, and benefits from an affiliation with WeWork Global, which provides brand licensing and access to a global network of locations.[33][34][35]

Operations

[edit]

WeWork India offers a range of flexible workspace and ancillary services, provided across a portfolio of centres in major metropolitan areas.[10][36]
