Redirecting categories
[edit]Happy New Year, Mike!
When speedily renaming categories where the old name should be redirected, e.g. Category:Gracie-King family, please include the code REDIRECT in the nomination, as this is a lot easier than making the redirect afterwards. – Fayenatic London 22:47, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

I have sent you a note about a page you started
[edit]Hi Mike Selinker. Thank you for your work on Bedroom (video directors). Another editor, Rodney Baggins, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:
Please note that ref.5 is a dead link that can't be rescued (I've tried finding a good archive but found none) so it would be good to replace that with an alternative reliable source. It would also be nice to see an infobox on this page. Other than that, it's good to go. Rodney Baggins (talk) 16:28, 6 February 2025 (UTC)
To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Rodney Baggins}}. (Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)
{{Re|Rodney Baggins}}Whoops. I fixed that link and will get an inbox together. Thanks! Mike Selinker (talk) 20:28, 6 February 2025 (UTC)

The article Real-time card game has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Probably a made up phrase
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Band member categories
[edit]Hi Mike, I've found a few single-member categories that you created within the "musicians by band" scheme. I assume these had more but articles on other band members at one point but have since been redirected. I was wondering if you could empty/delete these rather than having us go through the process of a CfD. Here's the list:
- Category:Debate Team (band) members
- Category:Electric Boys members
- Category:The Europeans (band) members
- Category:Tilly and the Wall members
Thanks. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 07:35, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
- Done. Some of the redirect activity seems a little overzealous, but that doesn't much matter to me. If the articles get reinstated, it's easy to recreate the categories. Mike Selinker (talk) 20:29, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
Policy on photos on Wikipedia
[edit]Hello,
Just wanted to ask about the photos on these articles and whether in your opinion these are appropriate / comply with Wikimedia/Wikipedia policies?
Specifically talking about the photo of the "modern Sinaloa" player on the "Mesoamerican ballgame" article and the photo at the top of the article on "Darra, Queensland".
I appreciate there are cultural contexts to consider in relation to Mexican games so I may be overreacting but I just wanted to run it by someone anyway, thanks for your help.
Thanks Cantankeroussloth (talk) 15:29, 30 August 2025 (UTC)
- My recommendation is to start a discussion on the talk pages of those articles and see how people think about it. If the community thinks a thing on Wikipedia is cultural biased, it's usually swiftly dealt with. Mike Selinker (talk) 01:25, 1 September 2025 (UTC)

I dislike your close of the RM on the article. I think the discussion should be allowed to breathe, and at its conclusion can be kept or moved to a Killing/Murder/Assassination of. Additionally, I feel the "killing" move, despite my belief in it being logical, is also unilateral, and bad practice to perform while a multifaceted discussion involving many editors is ongoing. DatGuyTalkContribs 06:36, 11 September 2025 (UTC)
- As I said in my close, it's almost certainly an intermediary move. The discussion will very likely be re-initiated within a day or two as details come to light, and it might change from there. If you feel strongly about it, I encourage you to call for it to be reopened. Mike Selinker (talk) 06:42, 11 September 2025 (UTC)

Guide to temporary accounts
[edit]Hello, Mike Selinker. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.
Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.
How do temporary accounts work?
- When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:
~2025-12345-67(a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5). - All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
- A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
- As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
- There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
- There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.
Temporary account IP viewer user right
- Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
- Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.
Impact for administrators
- It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
- It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
- Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).
Rules about IP information disclosure
- Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
- Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.
~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR
, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67) - See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.
Useful tools for patrollers
- It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options →
Enable the user info card
- This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
- Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
- Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
- The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

Categories
[edit]Seems as though you should already know this, but when adding categories to an article, they must be supported by the article's verifiable content. Thank you for being more careful in the future. DonIago (talk) 21:52, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
- Which category do you think I added in error? Mike Selinker (talk) 22:03, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
- You added a category indicating that people were members of The Bleeding Heart Band to articles for those people were there was no mention of that band. DonIago (talk) 02:31, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. The Roger Waters band is often called The Bleeding Heart Band, which is mentioned in the first paragraph of Michael Kamen's article: "He began his work as a pop and rock music arranger, notably for Pink Floyd, and was a member of the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble and the Roger Waters Band.” Both he and Jim James are listed on List of Roger Waters band members. So, you can see this is from that article. But, sure, James is not described as such in his article, so I will not give him that distinction until the article describes his association with Waters’ band, if it ever does. Thanks for checking up on it. Mike Selinker (talk) 03:44, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, thanks. I had no idea of the first part, and we probably shouldn't assume readers will know that. Could that clarification be added to the articles involved? DonIago (talk) 18:30, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, for sure. But until then the categories should stay off, as you suggest. Mike Selinker (talk) 20:29, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
