OnlyOffice, stylized as ONLYOFFICE, is a productivity software suite developed by Ascensio System SIA, a Latvian software company founded in 2009. It is available as an open source community edition and a proprietary enterprise edition. Initially introduced as a project management and collaboration platform called TeamLab, it was rebranded as ONLYOFFICE in 2014 with a focus on online document editing and office productivity.[5][6]
The suite includes applications for word processing (Document Editor), spreadsheets (Spreadsheet Editor), presentations (Presentation Editor), PDF files viewing and editing (PDF Viewer and Editor), form creation, and diagram visualization.[2] It natively supports the Office Open XML formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx, etc.).[7]
ONLYOFFICE is available as both a cloud service and a self-hosted software, with deployment options for Linux and Windows servers, as well as desktop clients for Windows, macOS, and Linux,[8] and mobile apps for iOS and Android.[3] The suite also integrates with platforms such as Nextcloud, ownCloud, Seafile and Confluence.[9][10] The desktop client uses the Chromium Embedded Framework.[11]
The software's Community Edition is distributed under the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL), while commercial editions with extended features and support are offered by Ascensio System SIA under a proprietary license.[12][13]
ONLYOFFICE has been adopted by French government organizations,[14] and is available in 45 languages.[4]
History
[edit]In 2009, a group of software developers from Ascensio System SIA (Latvian-based) and New Communication Technologies (Russian-based) launched a project called TeamLab, a platform for internal team collaboration.[15]
In March 2012, TeamLab introduced the first HTML5-based online document editors at CeBIT.[16]
In July 2014, TeamLab Office was officially rebranded to OnlyOffice.[17][18]
In March 2016, the developers released a free desktop application – OnlyOffice Desktop Editors.[19]
In August 2023, OnlyOffice opened a holding company in Singapore and incorporated all the existing branches (those in Latvia, US, UK, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Serbia) under the one brand. Ascensio System SIA was to become 100% owned by the British-based Ascensio System Ltd, which in its turn was to become 100% owned by OnlyOffice Capital Group Pte. Ltd. The beneficiaries of OnlyOffice Capital Group Pte. Ltd. are listed in the registry of Singapore companies by ACRA.[20]
In February 2023,[21][22] OnlyOffice released the first version of the ChatGPT plugin.[23] In January 2024, version 1.1.4 of the plugin was released which provided new tools for document editing and access to GPT-4.[24]
In November 2024,[25] OnlyOffice launched Virtual Data Rooms for file security with automated indexing and content tracking.[26]
Organization
[edit]Based in Latvia, OnlyOffice owner Ascensio System SIA was a subsidiary of Russian-based New Communication Technologies.[27] Due to EU economic sanctions targeting Russia, European organizations that used the commercial version of OnlyOffice were prohibited from doing so.[28]
